I used whatever I want, because I was a FBW/G/G farmer.
Once I actually moved on to playing Gold without being a camping stupidface, I used the Kroguard.
Moving up to Gold - what kits did (do) you use(d)?

Technically he was because he doesn't play anymore.
but lol.
On topic: prefer Asari Adept and Salarian Infiltrator. Then QMI.

I did some time on FBWGG with my Demolisher. Later it was TSent and QMI.

not lots of HV with a shield boost somewhere. It is still a go to class: you only have to charge nova and side jump to be pretty immortal.

Human adept. Because it`s hard to play weapon platforms w/o good weapons and weapon mods. And grenade spammers don`t really work w/o grenade capacity gear.

QFI against Geth back in the day when you could hack two Primes. I would alternate between QFI and SE. Fire Base White anyone?

FBWGG was my first (and second and third and so on until about the 30th or so) .. my very first Gold was played with the Justicar and a Crusader I ... I did not contribute much (Unless you consider a defensive bubble helping - Knowing what I know now, with that old White configuration, it should have been an offensive bubble at the front entrance .. I could have BE'd everything)
Then I got the Shadow and learned all about ES spam out the front entrance to the lower room .. over and over and over ... then I rolled the Kroguard, used him for many matches (he got boring quickly - somehow I didn't find ES boring though ..)
Graduated to the Trooper and Valkryie in short order ... it was about this time I discovered the potential OPness of the GI
Could I write a longer, more boring post?
PS. Reminds me of the old days, when I used to have an onion on my belt (it was the style at the time) and would sit on a street corner and tell every passerby stories with no point ... ah, onion ...

I generally advise using kits with some sort of DR when moving up a class. You are able to take fewer hits, and the DR will help in letting you get back to cover in time. Classes like the Batarian Soldier, Justicar, Krogan Soldier/Sentinel, Geth Trooper, Human Sentinel, Kroguard, etc., have a little added survivability.
For my money, the Batarian Soldier is the best for moving from Silver to Gold. He has high HP, good DR, a great stagger power, awesome armor damage through Inferno Grenades, and pretty decent movement speed, and you can carry a pretty big weapon with him if you need to. You can also use Incendiary Ammo to make things a little easier/cheesier.
EDIT: I tend to avoid suggesting pure weapon-damage classes for moving up to Gold, because most people in that position don't have great weapons.
