Someone is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe!  Image IPB

Oh…wait, that’s something else entirely.  It should be, someone is killing certain merchant lords and leaving dismembered body parts at the crime scene!  What I have: a passable murder mystery, some interesting slimy characters, plenty of blood placeables, a plot twist or two, enough body placeables for the task, but what I don’t have are body parts.  Before I start (badly) dismembering dead body placeables, has anyone already done this?  Arms, legs, torso, heads – gotta have the heads.  Spattered with a bit of blood and gore…or am I being too hopeful here?  I know there are plenty of bone placeables, but bones just aren’t…well…gory enough.  Modeling beyond very, very simple objects, is, for me 10 parts frustration and 1 part scotch.  No, wait, that’s wrong too.  Its 10 parts frustration and 1 part really, really ugly unconvincing  placeable as a result.

So...brother, can you lend me a hand...arm...foot...  You get the picture.

Don't know how much it'll help, but Estelindis did some moderately gory wounded body parts for the Dec 2010 CCC: Field War Hospital.

Wouldn't be terribly difficult to turn those and perhaps Six's really creepy heads from Sep 2011 CCC: Horror/Creepy into placeables, or even items...

How gory ya talking, 3?
As in, don't-post-screenies-here gory?
Might be interested...

Any specifics on gender? Specific parts?

There's some great raw meat textures already available...

When I wanted dismembered bodies I usually used an actual NPC and selected the "null" appearance for all but the body part in question. This let me "distribute" an NPC around (including in their original clothes etc! Great for when an existing character gets offed). I then stuck suitable quantities of icky blood everywhere (there's a lot of blood placeables - walls, floors, pools, splatters the works - in, I think, CEP; might be Q though, can't remember). Of course this won't help if you're looking for gore textures on the parts themselves. There are some "sewn up" and "disfigured" heads in Q though, if I recall.

Rolo: Turn them into items? Oh that's just sick...and perfect.  Seriously that would be very useful.

Penumbra: Well, it does get gorier as the plot progresses, but this is a humanoid doing the dirty work, so half eaten bodies, while certainly useful elsewhere for other people I'm sure, wouldn't exactly fit here. Think sharp cutting implement, a blunt object, and some serious aggression to work out. Goriness level? Well, I just spoke to the person who DMs our LAN game. In her words, "Violent murder is gory -- so bring it on."

Edit: Genders.  All male.  Four people.  Heads are a must for all four, a few torsos, and a basket full of limbs.  God, I feel like I'm ordering takeout.  Would you like anything else on the pizza, ma'am?

Von Stalhein: That's a delightfully specific idea. Wish that was something within the range of my skills.  OR, someone could tell me how to do that.

<chewing thoughtfully...>

I'll let VP do all the dirty work, seeing how keen she is to apply the sharp end of the stick.
Edit: The item thing has a couple limitations. One is that you only have one drop-model per baseitem, which either means defining a whole bunch of baseitems or picking and choosing which bodypart you actually want for items (heart and brains comes to mind... Head would be too specific, all of them different).

Re VS' idea: Just use a creature wizard to make various NPCs... then, in the appearance tab of the properties, null out (choose number 00) for most of the parts. This only works on the dynamic races, though. If you get an appearance that's greyed out, it means you chose one that's not dynamic. Simply choose another appearance in the dropdown on the first tab and try again.

Of course, you have to make the NPC lie down and play dead afterwards... ;-)

Edit: For blood, you just can't beat Tarot's Bloodbank =)

That is not actually true. You can have one default drop-model for each base item, BUT you can also create a drop model for each item.

Example, you create a "bodypart" baseitem type. You define a meat sack as the generic drop model. Then you create unique item models for bodypart001 - bodypart012. Until you make unique drop models for 001 - 012, you will see the meat sack for that item on the ground. But each custom drop model you make, will show up on the ground.

<surprised at how much trouble...>

Heh, the blasted dwarf made dropmodel variations for the torcs and they didn't show. That's when he made a bunch of baseitem types.

Now I gotta go work on them some more.
I'm cutting him off!

Edit: Yup, works fine :-P Problem was the numbering of the dropmodels. Followed an old guide that said to number them xxy.mdl where xx was the variation and y was the material. Guess that's only for 3-part models :-P

Now the lazy old dwarf needs to re-pack the torcs for the CCC.

Rolo, I thought Von Stalhein was talking about something in GMax. I'll see how a few body parts look don't the way you describe though.

As for the Bloodbank, well, to put this as gently as I am able, TR has done some really nice placeable work, but most of the blood in the Bloodbank doesn't look all that much like blood. Well, in comparison to the large amount of blood I've been around IRL (think field dressing and butchering large game.) The small spatter that doesn't have the shading effect works the best, but the large blood pools that seem to have a faux 3d shading thing going on isn't that convincing -- at least for me. Blood doesn't look that way -- even freshly spilled blood doesn't.

I think of TR's work as cartoony, and whimsical horror (Sam Raimi style).

If someone did something similar but with realistic textures, it could also work very well.

The two however are very different styles, and don't fit together very well as you note.

Exactly right.  They'd actually look cool I think in a setting for whimsical horror.  Sam Raimi style indeed.

[All rise for judges henesua and 3RavensMore ]

In my defence your honours the piece in question started out as something I did for an october (ie halloween) ccc. The vibe I was aiming for was a tongue in cheek version of classic slasher movies (Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street/Halloween etc. with a dash of Ghostbusters). In other words don't take anything that has bloody cat paw prints running straight up a wall too seriously. While I may have displayed them in an exterior setting in broad daylight, I peronally think they work best in a completely dark (ie torches only or black) interior setting where the brighness of the red is an advantage.

Having said that let's examine this colour thing. Just going with a human example, at any one time there can be a large variation in the colour of fresh blood from the same individual at the same time. For example there is a difference in colour between blood from a vein and blood from an artery. Then there is blood that has been vomited after an injury - frothy pink from a punctured lung whereas you can get dark coffee grounds coloured blood when a stomach ulcer bursts.  Then there are all the variations you get as the blood actually dries out...

In non humans there is the horseshoe crab that has blue blood, some marine worms have green blood, some marine invertebrates have violet-pink blood and, when exposed to air, some sea squirts and sea cucumbers have blood that turns a bright mustard yellow . So what colour should I have used?

In closing, use my placeables or not. The choice is yours. It is, after all, just a matter of taste (slightly salty with a bit of a metalic tang if I remember correctly :pinched:). And don't forget the old standby - a pot of Al'Ke Mists' Red (Best paint in the multiverse) - left somewhere closeby for the pc to find.:)

Sorry TR, I really wasn't trying to be judgmental. Rereading what I wrote, it did sound that way, so I apologize for that.

since its on the subject of gory and horrifying. i had some ideas to begin developing some medieval torture devices
it would go great with the addition of adismemberment  theme of sorts

i got into a it after wanting to develop a dungeon with a different flaire in my mod

www.medievalwarfare.info/torture.htm

ive already developed a few using the cep, but id like more legit types. so far i have

rat torture extraordinaryintelligence.com/medieval-torture/

the breaking wheel www.medievalwarfare.info/torture.htm#wheel

The saw www.medievalwarfare.info/torture.htm#sawing

witches chair www.medievalwarfare.info/torture.htm#chair

&

the judas cradle www.medievalwarfare.info/torture.htm#judas

they turned out really well in game but dont work, having a sort of dismembering parts piece would help in the right direction

i feel the same way about saw torture. being sawn in half isnt quite the way id go

most of these were easy to make with cep, but what were really missing here is a brazen bull (www.medievalwarfare.info/torture.htm#bull) why isnt this in the game yet!?!

That saw grinding peoples in half from top to bottom is just sick. When i first learned about that ..man is that... and the rat torture? Who was it that had such ideas in the name of their lord?... ah disgusting

The dark ages under the grip of the catholic church were basically the hell on earth for the average people. For some other tortute methods you can look up the book "hexenhammer" or malleus maleficarum.

Hey!
Who made this game anyway?! <_<

There I am, minding my own business.
A little cut here, a precise contusion there and suddenly I notice something

Icons for a 1x1 item (like a severed hand) are 32x32px. Check.
Icons for a 2x2 item (like a severed head) are 64x64px. Check.
Icons for a 1x4 item (like a severed... oops, guess I need to find something long and skinny to sever next! :P) are 32x128px. Check.

Check-_-

Icons for a 1x3 item are 32x128px   :?  :pinched:

Do you know what happens if you make a 1x3 icon 32x96px? The icon gets stretched out to 128px and then the bottom 32px get snipped off! <_<
All that lovely mayhem just gone!

I was so freaking mad! :pinched::pinched::pinched:
All that work... :crying:
What you need to do is make a proper 32x96px icon (cuz that's what's displayed) and then pad it with 32 px of nothing.
Grrrrrr.

Why didn't anyone tell me! :(

Time to pout! Buh-bye!=]

as for your request 3RavensMore i can do a dismembered body of a male for you. I cant do any female or child... thats beyond my humanity;) But a few ugly heads resembling the big bankers of our own world today is a pleasure for me to do together with whatever you need. I already have nice zombies and corpses which dont look to off being used as a guide. I have plenty images in my mind how i see them all dead;)

Pen: That usable several arm is just...words escape me.  I love the way your mind works.

Baba: I had thought of using zombies, but they weren't...er...fresh enough, if you know what I mean.  Bankers heads; you know, I hadn't actually thought of it that way.  That works nicely though, doesn't it?  The more heads, the better.  A couple of whole dead bodies -- with obvious wounds -- would do very well indeed.

btw, you're complaint about the 1x3 inventory icon solved that issue for me as well. I have a few 1x3 items that have been crushed into a 1x2 space. It wasn't pretty. They hollered quite a lot, but I made them fit.

[very tongue in cheek question]
@3RavensMore you say this is for a murder mystery module? It doesn't by any chance feature a lead pipe, a rope, a candlestick and a colonel mustard by any chance? Go on give us a clue. Doh!
