I have never heard of a SoundMax HD Audio codec. I looked at the SoundMax website and only saw external speakers. Are you sure that SoundMax supplied the Audio IC's on your MB?

What AV software are you running?

The AV software installs itself as a filter driver in the NTFS stack. It intercepts all NTFS filesystem fopen(), fread(), and fwrite() calls made by any application. There are two ways to do this. The first is to scan completely at the fopen(). This can cause problems when the texture file is 2GB+. The texture file is usually indexed so that textures are grabbed only when needed.  The other way is to scan only on access.  The first slows application initialization and the second slows application running.

Does your AV software automatically scan the entire file upon opening? If so then your AV software may be trying scanning 8GB+ of textures etc. during start up, which could take some time. I have heard of this problem with a version of AVG Free on another game. You may need to exclude the ME1 directories from being scanning during real-time.

Ah, AV = Anti-virus.  Sorry, wasn't sure what you were referring to.
I have Symantec and I disabled real-time protection temporarily.  No difference.
Good thought, though.

Althou I have Win7 64 Ultimate , I heard that ME have problems with Vista 64 because of sound .

Try this ( BACKUP YOUR FILES BEFORE DOING ANYTHING )

1) in /program files/Mass Effect/Binaries locate the OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll files

2) Rename OpenAL32.dll to OpenAL32.bak

3) Rename wrap_oal.dll to OpenAL32.dll

4) Launch as Admin by using the MassEffect.exe

Hey, that worked!
Thanks for the help!
Now let's see if it works after undoing all of the crap tech support had me change on my system.

Halabit, are you saying that you did that in Win7 and it worked for you, or are you referring to a vista-only solution?

Of course since Creative wrote OpenAL it will work on any non-Creative Audio card/built-in. Figure that. I have no problem with both Vista x64 and Win7 x64 on a RealTek built-in. LOL

... and I have a Creative card, a SB Audigy 2 ZS, which apparently isn't supported at all and requires the audio to be in software mode. I haven't tried hardware mode to see if this is accurate, because I don't want to deal with the potential crashes. Besides, the configuration tool scanned my system and set audio to software. Then again, it also set my resolution low and other video settings to medium. I turned everything up to highest settings and cranked up the resolution and the game still runs without the slightest visual problem with only one of my video cards (crossfire turned off). Something tells me the configuration tool is not terribly accurate.

;)

Fire up the ME2 launcher. Select Configure. 1st option under SYSTEM on the left is summary. Click on there. It will give you the hardware specs of your computer. Put all of that info into your next post.
