Also, this is what a staged spear fight look like. Not all too entertaining. Note that they transition to swords as soon as possible.
Emphasis on "staged".
Also, they don't transition to sword as soon as possible, the destroy the spear as soon as possible, for good reason.
Also, if we get polearms, please no spear'n'shield style. That is reserved for formation warfare, single combat with polearms was always favoured to use the polearm alone with both hands.
Spears, yes please. Spears and shield in tandem, only if I get to bring an army with me and said army is clever enough to use formations. If not, keep the shield, it's only additional weight you can't use.
That also isn't quite trule. A spear-and-shield is viable in solo combat. In fact there was a popular gladiator type called a Hoplomachus who was armed and equipped in that manner, and who fought against opponents armed with swords.

Well, we are not going to get "realistic" so may as well look at staged.

Here we have to agree on disagreeing. I personally wouldn't like an overly stylized combat, already had enough of that in DAII.

Sylized? More like stupified.
You can have stylized combat that APPEARS plausible (assuming you aren't an expert in the area). But hyper-realism tends to be slow paced and aggravating.

In my experience, real sword combat is fast and furious, and usually short. An excellent anareobic excercise, where 30 seconds of fighting will leave you as winded as a good jog.

Can't we have one kind of game without guns? I mean, seriously.
You've got bows, magic staves (instead of wands), and well, one crossbow, anyway. Fire away.
