How is Cerberus going to be portrayed in this game?

In ME1 Cerberus was this evil secret society that performed hideous research on live subjects to further their shady goals (remember the "what happens if we fed people to rachni" side quest in ME1).  But now that they sort of bring you back from the dead and you start working for them; does that make them the new good guys? What do you all think Shepard’s new relationship with them will be?

Also sorry for any spoilers, I kind of assumed that this was all well known by now.

I tink they'll probably be a bit more sympathic or at least far less omnimous and able to unleash hell upon the univers if needed

I think that they will do whatever it takes to get the job done.

So far it would appear as though they are less umbrella corp. and more we are doing what everyone else is refusing to do to save human lives.

I think I've read the books - so since they are interchangable... I know what I'll be doing with/to Cerberus.

Hmm i supposed we would be their henchmen, always obeying the MAN, or else not much for sheps opinion towards them since their world happens to be ending i assume.

In that latest Sci vs Fi video they are described as "Pro human" and "Not necessarily a terrorist group but it's not far from it".

They'll probably get a slight retcon to make them less "LOL EVIL"

Well in ME1 they had some good fun feed humans to crazy stuff and observing what happened. Well then again, like all of the corporations did that.

My opinion is that Cerberus is probably going to stick to its more questionable ways. If Shepard is going to be working with them, it'll likely only be because his goals align with theirs and is being used as a tool to carry out their dirty work with less flak being directed at them. As soon as it's over, I fully expect Cerberus to drop Shepard like used Kleenex.

No matter what facade they put up in ME2 to make them seem more agreeable, as far as I'm concerned the nature of the beast was shown in ME1 and a leopard can't change its spots that easily. Any deals I make with them will be made with the utmost caution, and with the expectation of a backstab later.

They're going to be a three-headed beast, of course. There's the illegal RnD, the paramilitary squads and the political machinations that no doubt have something to do with the Shadow Broker. I'm not going out on a limb and saying that they are the Shadow Broker or anything, but they certainly make use of the Broker's services.

In ME2, you owe your life to the first head, are part of the second head (though not actually under Cerberus direct control), and hopefully get to punch the third head at some point.

That's what I'm predicting.

I think Cerberus will be portrayed as the "lesser evil" in ME2. It's a matter of stopping extinction, and Shepard does what he has to, even if that coincides with the goals of a sinister black-ops organization. The bigger threat is the Collectors, and even bigger, the Reapers, so Shepard can use all the allies he can get. But like Ashley said last game, "just don't count on them staying allies".

I'd hardly call them the new 'good guys', but rather simply an ally of convenience. They need your help, you need their help, doesn't mean you trust or love one another. Furthermore like most fringe groups, potential recruits are rarely shown the 'worst face' of an organization up front. Rather, Shephard is likely only shown what Cerebus wants him to see. It's not just about controlling his actions to get him to help you, it's about getting him to think along predictable patterns that you as an organization could manipulate to your advantage later on.

Cerberus must be destroyed for humanity to truly advance to their next stage of psychological evolution.

I'm glad I'll be the one to help usher in a new age.

Regardless of how else they are portrayed one thing is for sure: They will be portrayed in a great deal more depth and subtlety than "omg evil scientists!!11!".

I think they will aim to make some players more sympathetic towards them rather than painting them as out and out bad guys (which they were in mass1).

Am I the only person sympathetic to their position? I'm actually hoping to get the inside scoop on Cerberus from Miranda and/or Jacob so people can realize that despite their questionable methods they're really looking out for what's best for humanity.

No, you're not the only one that's sympathetic to them. I am, at least as far as they need to be portrayed as villains with more depth and complexity. I like my heroes to have character flaws, and my villains to have redeeming qualities. If everything is just black and white and your convictions are never challenged, if you never once stop to think "maybe he has a point...am I doing the right thing?" then there's no potential for interesting storytelling, in my opinion.

Cerberus are definitely 100% the good guys....the only ones willing to do what it takes to save humanity and the galaxy from certain destruction while everyone else wants to sit around and argue about morality and politics until the reapers come to kill everything.

I really couldn't care less about how they are portrayed in this game so long as I get to slug one of the higher up's as revenge for Kahoku's death.

Though I don't doubt they probably will be shown a bit more sympathetically this time around.

Why "sadly"? They need it. I believe the writers when they say they want TIM to represent the best and worst of humanity. How can they do that when TIM is the guy in charge of the idiot organization from the first game?

Really, how compelling is this:

Anonymous, generic evil scientist #1: lol im bored lets inject a human with thresher maw blood to see what happens

Anonymous, generic evil scientist #2:
rofl! okay lets do it lol

Seriously? I think Bioware can do better than that, in fact I expect better than that.

I'm guessing we only scratched the surface of Cerberus in ME1. The Illusive Man is going to provide us with a face to an organization that, in the first game, just seemed like a bunch of unscrupulous nuts who had completely lost sight of their mission. I'm looking forward to some enlightening conversations with Illusive Man in which he'll make some excellent points only the most "Lawful Stupid" of players can ignore.

Well,
considering Corporal Toombs isn't a scientist, and is suffering from
some serious post-traumatic stress disorder, he's not a reliable
witness to what Cerberus was doing to him. Thresher maw venom may have
mutagenic properties in small doses, or it may not have even been
"acid." Toombs might have assumed it was acid because it caused a
horrendous burning sensation. It could have been thresher blood for all we know.
