I don't see the problem if it's optional. If anything, I think its creepy and extremely selfish to want anything thats OPTIONAL removed or toned down because you don't like it.

If DA2 is any indication, I'd certainly say they do do need more depth - at least back to Origins level and as long as it optional so that peeps who aren't into that stuff aren't forced into it.

I think those elements just add to making a good story, but yea I see your point.

Hugging your companion doesn't add to the story.

Being able to develop relationships with companion characters is a huge draw for some people, an important aspect of the story and the emotional connection we have to it. The ability to hug them can be part of that.

It certainly doesn't detract from the story.

Fair. However, I'm just speaking on the specifics of hugging.

Ewwwww, Merril as a great romance, spending more time on her. No thanks.

The fact that her personality changes based on how you interact with Her makes her's one of the better ones. You don't like her...Fine, but her rmance is not bad.

I despite her personality, but I also found her romance bad. This is my opinion and I already posted many times what I thought about the DAII romance overall for months. I found them mediocre at best. Merril didn't even understand some of my attempt to flirt with her. ( the same as Aveline ) as if what I said wasn't even taken into account.

Her not understanding some of the attempts  is just part of her personality/ It more of a case you just don't like her then her romance being bad.

Meh, I thought it was pretty dysfunctional. Aveline had the same issue.  And I don't think Biwoare ever said that it was because of her personality. I'm almost certain that his writer ( lukas ) had told something over this issue.

Also my personal feeling toward a character has nothing to do with what I could think about the romance overall. That's the DAII romance , its execution that I found bad. I love Isabela, and I found her romance cool enough, though, not really interested.

It is part of her personality. Listen to any of her banter and you'll see it plain as day. If you did like her romance because of time where she did not get it then you are just looking down on it because of her personality.

Hugging adds to my life story every day.

This may or may not be relevant.

Hugging may be silly but in Origins the ability to walk up and give your LI a kiss whenever you wanted after the romance developed far enough, made it feel like a real ongoing relationship was going on between the two characters. In DA2, this felt really lacking.

Something so little, can mean a lot and if it's appropriate for a scene Bioware wants to express, by all means, let someone give a hug.

HUGS RUIN MY IMMERSION MAN.

I think Bioware's approach to romance was really spot on, actually. There aren't a lot of other games that even offer it. The funnier thing is... it's completely optional. In Mass Effect, most romances were easily avoidable. You could accidentally romance someone in DA:O (looking at you f!warden and leliana!) And I didn't really like my options in DA2. I'd like a bit more subtlety, too. Some of the flirt options were a bit... forward.

Seriously... you give me Anders. Who I was all gung-ho for in Awakening. Then they change him. Fenris was eh. Merrill was eh. Isabela was probably the most real, she didn't have a ton of emotional issues :P And Sebastian. No.

Obviously, there are those who scream "waifu lovers" or use that term and prefer to hate on certain people who prefer relationships or romances in general over the story (which can be a bad thing), but I usually find that the romantic elements add a deepness to the stories themselves, regardless of again, the execution. Which is either a hit or miss with how you view romances in general. I find The Witcher 1 romances over hyped by over 9000, but hey - we get to see booty and that SCREAMS maturity, am I right?

You're giving Miley way too much credit. Her bottom is not that size.
