Completely agreed. I wish the Beta had stuck to its original principle of granting people access to the Keep based on what kind of testers they needed at the time. It seemed that BioWare were going out of their way to make access to the Keep as fair as possible and I respected that.

Now it's just turned into an awful sideshow where people are either begging for scraps on the BSN or hitting F5 on Twitter for days on end, only to not get a code anyway. It seems like it's been designed to make people feel as bad as possible about themselves and I've read posts where people complained that it was triggering their depression. That was what really made me feel deeply uncomfortable about the whole thing and I'm glad I haven't joined in the recent giveaways.

I don't want to sound like a total dick, but it's really up to each individual how deeply they get invested into things. Nobody, Bioware or other forum goers, can be held responsible or should feel bad if people get overly invested in something.

If someone's depression is being triggered because they aren't getting a Beta code they should discuss that with their psychiatrist. That's simply not a healthy reaction to something like this. And honestly, this kind of stuff is meant to be fun, and it's just as frustrating for me (and I'll assume Devs) when they try to have fun or do something nice and people go completely off the deep end when it doesn't work out in their favor.

There's genuinely nothing Bioware can do to please everyone. Hell, people were complaining about how they handled the Beta invites in general - not just going for the first people who applied and choosing those that met criteria. People were getting their feelings hurt over that too.

Agree with this. A little perspective is necessary  :)

The Keep beta started with small numbers and has rolled out in size for testing reasons, not as a fan service.

The ability to apply for the beta will end in a few days as launch approaches.

Beta testing is not always all it is cracked up to be, it doesn't always work and it's often not finished.

It's often not a 'free look' at the finished article.

I see it as a way to exponentially increase the load on their servers. They have x number of people in beta. Each person gives away 5 keys. They now have 5x people in beta. If people are taking it to that extreme, getting so worked up that they become depressed, that is not BW fault, or the fault of the keepers who didn't give said people a code. It's a game, it should be treated as such.

I know from the other thread that you've been handing out Beta codes to people and that doesn't put you in an enviable position as far as I'm concerned. I would not be comfortable having the power to decide who gets one and who does not. I've commented positively on the forums when a user went out of her way to make her code giveaways a fun game, and I've seen plenty of others try to be as fair as they can possibly be, which I respect.

My problem is with BioWare's intentions. There was complete about-face in their initial commitment to fairness. They were clear from the start that Keep access would not be served up on a first come first serve basis because they wanted to make it as fair as possible. Of course people still got upset, but I was happy to see BioWare were at least trying their best to do the right thing.

Fast-forward to the giveaways and it's become a complete free-for-all. I'm sure this is the result of someone in marketing trying to create a buzz and that no one has any bad intentions. But there is a thoughtlessness behind the ideas for the code giveaways where previously there was a commitment to fairness. That's what I dislike about it.

They should have had a bazaar, where people advertised their game for them by spamming links in an attempt to win fake currency with which to bid on Keep beta codes. That would be the fairest option

That is actually almost exactly what did happen in the other thread.

People were spamming links of cat pictures to win social currency with which they attempted to bid on Keep codes. Literally beyond parody.

With over 120,000 applicants so far, we're ending Keep beta applications soon! If you haven't applied yet, you still have a week to do so.

I am glad I missed this as well, I didn't even know about it but in all retrospect because the keep will come out at latest 2 months and a day (DA:I's due date, unless they still need time but anywayXD), so ultimately it's not that long anywayXD

Still that kind of technique is relatively thoughtless, I don't think it was a good idea to set stuff up like that...

*edit*

What do they mean by that I wonder?

I really don't see how it's that big of a deal, honestly. Instead of sending out a huge wave of emails to randomly selected people they tried to make it fun by offering up random codes to some of their biggest fans - twitter followers, forum members, etc. just because it's a little more open doesn't make it any less random. If they're going to let a huge hodge lodge of people in, I really don't care how they're doing it.

I honestly just think it's crappy for people to go so far off the rails that the only reasonable thing to do is exclude everyone and not do things like this anymore. It just seems so selfish.

On a personal note, I did have codes to give and I tried to find people that I've seen post frequently who weren't in yet or that are super helpful. I didn't make a spectacle about it and I don't think most people did. I totally get if it's not your preferred method, I just don't see what difference the method makes in the end. 120,000 applicants, chances are slim. It's open to everyone in a month or so.

I'd really hate for things like this or,the Take Your Place Competition to be discontinued because a small group of people take things too far (not you personally).

I'd also like to make a side note...

I completely understand that I'm an emotionless shrew and that everyone doesn't have the ability to use their icy heart and take the emotion out of a given situation.

WWWHHHHAAAAAATTTT!!!!!! I find you quite delightful.  :D After all you asked several of us if we had codes yet. An icy shrew would have just not given any codes away.

Ha! Well, thanks.

I've uttered the phrase "I'm really trying to care, but I just can't" too many times though!

Understandable. I think we are all feeling the pressure of all the innocuous questions about the Keep lately. "can we import?", "Will it fill in from the BSN?" AAARRGGHH! same questions all the time. It's nerve racking!!!!

People were selected on the basis of what kind of testers were required at that time. It wasn't random. Previously we were being told "Folks are not picked by 'first come, first serve'" so we all had "just as much chance as anyone to get in." It was framed as giving everyone an equal chance.

The Twitter giveaway was nothing but a fastest finger contest which didn't give people an equal chance. The recent giveaway is based on giving priority access to people who have the right friends. I get that people like yourself who have codes have tried to distribute them fairly and that's admirable, but BioWare themselves have lost all pretence of fairness. At this point, why not just open up Keep access to those who applied for it earliest? I disagree that that would be the right thing to do, but it would make sense considering BioWare are now just using the Keep to reward the most committed and popular fans regardless of giving everyone an equal chance.

But I've hammered this point home long enough. From what I've seen of the Keep it looks incredible and I'm happy to wait until it goes public.

With 2 months to launch. It doesn't matter so much. All the codes were at mid-end August. I was one of those that was sad at staying in the sad panda club due to my non-quickness but I didn't let it get me down (even if I did peek). If they had done this in march I might have been upset. This close I'm not.

(Disclosure I snagged a code from a kind member on here)

The twitter giveaway was the beginning of the stress testing phase. They are now looking for numbers of people as opposed to specific people. The giveaway made it fun for the new people getting in.

That it was intended to be fun I don't doubt. But in that sense it was short-sighted. Spamming F5 for a few hours while frantically typing random strings of letters and numbers into a box doesn't strike me as fun.

I disagree; I'd say that the closer we get to release the more it matters that people have time to prepare their world states in preparation for Inquisition. Mark Darrah made exactly that point in his original blog post on the Keep: "The Keep will be available to everyone a few months before DAI gets released, in order to give fans plenty of time to experiment with scenarios and make their history exactly how they want."

But this is pretty tangential to the point I was making in my previous posts. The timing of the giveaways has nothing to do with my opinions of them.

Tbh, I think they should have done the first come, first serve thing at the beginning, but it's a moot point now.
