Someone explain to me. If the purpose of attractive characters is marketing, then why are plenty of characters entirely absent in advertising still attractive? What's the purpose of it?

Again, I hope Cassandra, Varric, and Vivienne aren't the romance options indeed and aren't LIs, because they're some of my most hated characters (I like Varric, of course, but I hate the fact people want him to be romanced).

And, of course, David swoops in.

To get your attention so you interact with them. To draw you in, in other words.

Huh. I notice those things have nothing to do with marketing whatsoever. And just a while ago I had people claiming any attractiveness must be a marketing scheme. So is that not true, then?

But isn't sex appeal something that can apply to more than just marketing as well? Like, make a character sexy and people will be more drawn to them than they will ugly looking people? Unless those ugly people are extra hideous?

And here we go. This is what I was waiting for.

But isn't sex appeal something that can apply to more than just marketing as well?

So, we're considering the idea that the purpose of sex appeal is not marketing? Evveryone seemed to be sure that was the purpose just a while ago. Is this a voice of dissent?

Was that really what I said? I thought what I said was that it can apply to more than just marketing? Doesn't that mean that it still is part of marketing as well? I was sure that my meaning was clear that it is part of marketing, and part of psychological trickery by developers, did't it?

I am unaware of an attractive character that didn't feature in the advertising or marketing of the game, at some point.

Let me try and explain this simple point nice and slow.

Content cannot be used to sell a game if the player does not know about it. The player cannot magically divine every bit of content in the game by staring at the box.

The player does not know about EDI. Understand? He does not know. She's entirely absent from any advertising.

So explain to me how EDI being attractive causes the player to buy the game when they have no idea she even exists.

Let me explain slowly. You're taking the word "sell" way to literally. Sex appeal isn't restricted to marketing.

Because EDI is a robot and most don't find robots attractive. Also she's a relatively minor character.

Why are you bringing up EDI? I didn't see him talking about EDI. I didn't see him talking about anyone in particular. I can provide examples that prove his point though. You've done nothing but beat your own argument by bringing up an extraneous point.

Great. We have people admitting sex appeal isn't all about marketing. We're making progress. Let's keep going. What other purpose is there? Why are characters attractive in stories if not to bring in attention?

Why do you people keep responding to and feeding this fellow? It's an amusing sight, but just stop already, and he'll get bored.

Sex does sell.

But it's foolish to assume that's all it does. And as I continue to point out, that clearly makes no sense for a story without advertising.

This is true, of course. The reason for using sex appeal doesn't reduce down to one absolute thing.

That doesn't resolve why you found the initial comment "foolish" when they didn't really imply it boils down to only that one thing -- only that it's clearly a factor for BioWare. (and probably most game makers who makes games with women in them)

No one said it was. However, it is a major part of why said sex appeal is in the game.

Sex appeal for marketing and marketing sex appeal is more than just the two way road that you're prescribing.

He's bringing in EDI to Dragon Age, his trolling is so blatantly obvious that you should feel shameful giving in and feeding such nonsense.

Can we get this thread back on topic?
