I have completed the game with a human male (fighter/rogue) and and the city elf female and I have had a brief go at starting with all the other races and backgrounds and I have to say that my favourite is the city elf female (fighter/rogue) by far. What is your favourite one? Just curious as I want to start the game again as another race and background and like to see what other people chose.
Whats your favourite race and background?

I prefer human or dalish elf. Before someone jumps me for saying dalish elf, their origin is horrible, but the flavor it adds to the rest of the game makes up for it.

I really liked human noble and city elf as well.
The dwarven noble is very nice, especially if you have played through the game once before.
The mage is interesting, giving a different feel to part of the game and, at least for me, a nice "You gotta be kidding me" experience.
I liked the dwarven commoner background after I played the noble one, also because there were things being talked about which had me go "Damn, I know what they are talking about"
The Dalsih Elf origin left as last was a refreshing change of pace. It is very different to the others and not to everyone's tastes, but possibly the one that gives the most reason to join the Wardens. And it describes things, gives glimpses you will not get otherwise.

Human noble dual-weapon rogue.
Most complete and most entertaining.

Human male noble warrior, massive armour and dual wielding. Bad Ass.
If i could get over my heightest dislike for trying to immerse myself into the character of a dwarf then i would probably like the dwarven noble the best as it is the best written origin by far, i have yet to see anyone ever argue with that.

Elf Magi and human noble, human noble had the greatest emotional charge

City Elf, Human Noble, and Dwarf Noble are pretty cool.
Cool stories with twists. It seems like human noble is just 'the way to go' for ending possiblities which kind of makes me like Dwarves and Eleves more.

I think City Elf is the best opening. A lot of drama obviously and a ton of insight into the Human Elvish tensions that are unique in the game.
Dalish Elf is, to me, the worst.

Human noble, its so rare not to be painted as an incompetent buffoon for a change.

Human Noble... I think this would be the 'canon' storyline if there was one. The Arl Howe dynamic gives the story more life.

That said, as a human noble i was a little underwhelmed with the final encounter involving Arl Howe. Blink and both the pc and Arl had said their peice.

Favourites are the City Elf and the Human Noble, ideally female. Both are quite nasty.
Least Favourite would be the Mage one, regardless of race or gender. Not as horrific as it should have been, by far.

I like the elvish openings, but I am a sucker for elves in games. The city elf gives you insight on the second-class status of elves like others have said, and I like the flavor of the dalish origin. I guess it can be a little lacking, but it's flavorful and actually creates some emotional responses for the characters and the mini-story. Jowan in general kinda annoys me, and the elvish origins have definitely made me hate the Chantry.
The Human origin isn't bad, but I usually hate playing humans in games if I can avoid doing so.
Haven't played dwarf commoner, but the noble's story is good. one last note on the mage, yeah, now that I think about it, it would have been better with more psychological elements during the Harrowing.

Hierarchy of preference?
Elves > humans > dwarves.
In terms of how well stories were in my opinion, City Elf/Dwarf Noble > Human Noble > Dalish/Dwarf Commoner > Mage
Elves > humans > dwarves.
