For story Human Noble Fighter Two Handed Weapon FTW. Only level 10 and hitting in the 100's.
For game play and total destruction Elf Magi. when you get your Magic up over 70 watch out. That final run through Denerim was fireball after fireball of destruction. Dropping 10 - 20 people at a time is priceless.
Rogue is good for opening locks... didn't really have fun with the rogue. Maybe I should try an archer rogue? I did a duel wield rogue.

I like the Dalish the most. Next to Elf Magi. Although, my Dalish warrior could hit in the 100s all the way up to 167, wear massive dragon bone armor (Wade's the only way to go, best damn smith that ever virtually lived, haha), and hit in the 60s with Falon'Din's Reach (a bow).
Not really warrior material, but I made fine skill of bow with sword and shield.
<---There he is as a matter of fact!

City Elf, Human Noble, and Dwarf Noble were really emotionally intense and well written. My favorite is the City elf because it integrated my character into the story really well, and allowed me to start making a difference right off the bat.

Human Noblewoman, Sword & Shield Warrior
City Elf Female Rogue, Dual-wielder
Dalish Elf Male Rogue, Archer
Elf Mage, Usually as Female.
Worst: Dwarves. I just couldn't get into them.

Dalish elf by far. I have only played one other origin, however, but I just don't see how it could be set up better than that. Nothing more empowering, more awesome, than rising up from the impoverished, down trodden scum of the world to become a hero of the people.
I've been playing the Human Noble and I just feel like a douche bag comparitavely. I mean his entire family are just yech. Priveleged boring people.
Um, why is anyone even mentioning the damage their character could do or their spec, that has no bearing on the quality of the origin stories, or anything really.

Obvious bias aside, I love both of the Dwarven origins. The two have a stark contrast between one another, which makes playing through them subsequently a little more bearable than, say, playing as a Human Noble for the second time if you're wanting to make a Rogue after your Warrior.
I've always been a fan of Dwarves, and that makes it all the more interesting to play as a DA:O Dwarf since Bioware's made an effort to at least make them somewhat different from one another. Their political ways remind me somewhat of the Drow's from Forgotten Realms.
I also <3 the Provings.

I would have to say that the human Noble was the best over all, my wife however, loved playing a city elf female...

That would be Dalish Rogue (Hunter). It still feels like the one most destined to be a Grey Warden, and seems like the only one where you didn't got screwed one way or another into becoming one.
On top of that the Dalish are the spiritually richest people of all to me, most 'in-tune'.
When my Dalish Elf went out into the world, to master his Taint, it all had such a nice detached feeling, as all seemed so foreign to him and everyday filled with strange new things (politics, restrictions, opression, poverty). And when Duncan related the Wardens' credos to him during their journey to Ostagar, he just thought 'Yes, sure, nothing new there.'
All other Origins (races and backgrounds) always seemed to have an agenda of their own on top of that whole Blight business, or rather being shackled from a RP point, without ever really having the 'freedom of choice' feel to them.
But that's just my take on things.

Noble Human & Dwarf and City Elf are my favourite origin stories.
Noble Human explains the Arl Howe issues
While Noble Dwarf explains a lot about the dwarf main campaign storyline.
City elf shows the difference between the classes.

I prefer human noble ... I ran through as an Archer. The persuasion and lock picking made me a rich girl but other than that... eh.
I am running through right now as a Dalish dual wielding rogue.... definitely not my favorite. Probably going to re-roll and try the City Elf....

I'm on my third play through now having played Human noble and Dalish Elf,
i started the other race class combinations too and i must admit that even the emotional human noble story was strong, i liked being an outsider as an elf.
i look forward to my other play throughs as they are all of different origins except one.

Dalish elves definitely. They look good, they are elves, and... and... You can have a good dialogue with Duncan.

Dalish Elf for me. I have a weakness for elves. And I just love reading about their history and culture. I'm on my third playthrough which is my Human Mage but deep down I'm thinking I should have made her an Elf Mage instead. >_>

I like playing the Dwarfs lil short squat suckers who can take a punch and dish it out at the same time.Better have your rope ready and a big crowd if you go to put a dwarf on a boat they obviously despise them. You have to tie them to the Mast LOL
