I have done more play throughs with ME2 than the other two, but ME1 has a special place in my heart. It was all so fresh and exactly what I was looking for.

I play ME3 more than the others, due in large part to having the entire collection of DLC's for it, but I have to say that ME1 will always be the one I cherish the most out of the lot of them. ME2 was definitely the most amusing with its funny dialogue and various arcs in the missions, but despite the repetitive, rigid combat and some of the side missions feeling kind of like a chore, ME1 will always be the one I have the fondest memories of.

ME1 certainly has a special place in everyone's heart for introducing them to the trilogy. but for me ME2 has the most special place in my heart. I hated having to answer to the Alliance & the Council in the first one, and I hate being a goody-two-shoes Alliance boy in ME3, always having to report to godamn Hackett.
I much preferred it when I ran roughshod in ME2 without having to answer to anyone. yeah TIM gave me stuff to do, but it was much better than being an Alliance poster boy. I always rack up the highest Renegade score in ME2 out of all 3 games, and I come n go as I please.
The team is always the baddest in ME2. Asari Justicar, Veteran mercenary, unique Geth platform, powerful Krogan, adorable Asian Infiltrator, Archangel, Salarian ex-STG......take your pick. half the ME3 team sucks. I never use EDI, I hate Vega with a passion and Liara is an obsolete thing. Garrus & Javik are the two permanent squaddies for the first 50% of the game.
I started ME2 straight after finishing ME1 for the first time, and ME2 completely blew me away with the graphical/gameplay upgrades. and for some reason combat feels better in ME2 than ME3. I just love feeling the impact of the Grenade Launcher and overloading the Blood Pack Pyros. and god the heavies ruuuuuule!!
Arc Projector, Avalanche, Grenade Launcher, Guided Missile Launcher, Cain nuke, Collector Beam, Flamethrower. that you could take with you whenever you wanted. what does ME3 have? the Hydra and the Reaper gun that have only one shot in them BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
The ME2 environments are also a thing of beauty and immersive as hell. the Derelict Reaper, the Collector ship, Omega underbelly, Tuchanka, the futuristic beauty of Illium......luuuuuuuv em. The Suicide mission endgame is also a major highlight, so is its soundtrack. the "Legion Acquire" track on the Derelict Reaper is the most immersive track in ME2. had to include it.

ME2 for me. I think playing it first probably has something to do with that (wish I'd played 1 first though).

I really don't have a favorite for I like each of them for what they offered, Mass Effect 1 because the world was completely new and unknown so I had no expectations, Mass Effect 2 because of the amount of characters and the interactions with them and the variety of environments, and Mass Effect 3 because the characters continued to develop and I enjoyed the gameplay the most of the three.

It is a tie. I did love the first ME for introducing me to the amazing MEU and all that exploration. The story was amazing as well. Loved the gun mechanics. I played thru ME 2 the most and loved the final mission where you could utilize your whole squad. Loved the characters. The story was still good. The only thing i did not enjoy was the gunplay, no explotration and the Hammerhead.

I have to say ME1. The atmosphere is the best in my opinion and the novelty of the whole thing. And as unpopular this opinion is, I think the gunplay is better. No arbitary shields and armor that blocks biotics for one reason or another. You could bipass the shields of the enemies with some clever tactics and good planing. That is why Ilike ME1 the best.

I'll have to go with ME2.
It had the best writing, the best structure story wise and the best cast of squadmembers and of course one the most epic endings in entertainment.

The first and true Mass Effect. It did not feel like it was trying to copy other games while having the general feel of wonder and exploration of my favorite science fiction tv shows and books.

Its a cross between ME2 and 3. ME2 was my first game and I loved it and played it alot before ME3 came. Probably my only gripe with ME2 was the gameplay. I still played good but it was still lacking. ME3 fixed that for me, I was able to duck and roll alot faster and easier and dodge better. And I loved the fact that I can equip any gun on me no matter what class I'm in unlike ME2. And the multiplayer still has me hooked.
So basically: ME2 for the story and epicness. ME3 for multiplayer and good gameplay. Oh and the DLCs

Each has stuff/parts I love or works great or is bbest executed and each has stuff that's bad, or tedious, or lacks in some areas. Can't really pick one.

I like
* the gameplay of Mass Effect 3 (i.e. biotics perfectly balance between 1 & 2)
* the story, characters, and locales of Mass Effect 2 (i.e. more interesting personalities and locations)
* the diversity of equipment, minus the menus, in Mass Effect 1 (i.e. the option to wear LIGHT ARMOR and have selectable Biotic Amps and Omni-Tools)

In general I would agree but the story of ME2 hmmm, the loyalty missions were great but the actual core story of ME2 (Collectors and stuff) could've been told in 5 minutes, it was barely even there, the focus was on squadmates. So I would put ME3 story before ME2, even with all the problems.Darkstar Aurora wrote...

anyway I would add to your list
*the interaction between the squadmates and Reputation system of ME3
*the variety of sidequests and actually unique Neutral dialogue options of ME2
*the exploration aspect and gameplay diversity of ME1

The first mass effect actually had the most unique and believable feel of the 3 games. I mean I still like/play the other 2 games, but it felt like bioware actually handled ME1 with care and then that care degenerated over the other 2 games.

Mass Effect 2 because it's the one with most Jack and Miranda.

Really tough choice. I'd have to go with Mass Effect 1, purely for the great story and Saren, I preferred him over the other villains of the series. Under different circumstances Saren could have been a formidable ally against the Reapers.

The gameplay in ME1 was abysmal, although that wasn't really clear until I played the second and realized just how gimped the first game was. I can sum up my issues with ME1 with this phrase: Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards. Perhaps I would add Guns Don't Aim Where I Point Them. In a game that does an awful good job of looking like a TPS, it's acually quite poor as a TPS. However, the plot, the pacing, and the characters were all top notch, MaleShep's VO aside. 8/10.
ME2 is where the gameplay caught up with the plot, which again was top shelf. It had wonderful missions, unforgettable characters, and it was at its heart a tale of revenge, imo. It introduced me to some of my favorite characters in gaming (Grunt! Mordin! Zaeed!), and when the Normandy arrives on the other side of the Omega 4 relay smack in the middle of a ship graveyard, and the score takes off to heights unseen previously, I still get chills. There were some "interesting" choices or mechanics, i.e. the near total removal of an inventory, but overall it's a great entry in the series and much better than ME1 as a game. 9/10.
ME3 perfected the gameplay side of the equation. Shepard and company felt powerful, agile, and deadly. The introduction of the combo system (beyond its limited presentation in 2, that is) was genius, and when they were rebalanced to allow for more combos more often, that was the cherry on the sundae as far as I was concerned.
The enemies were a bit weak, but they present enough of a challenge on Hardcore and Insanity. Weapons were great, although the choice to make every weapon available to every class was highly questionable and led to the near-death of the Soldier as a fun character choice. The plot was alright, OG endings aside, and it has the best piece of DLC not named LotSB, Citadel. I thoroughly love firing up new Shepards and running through the ending to the saga. I can't say the same for ME1; the gameplay is too much like a chore, even if the plot is outstandingly executed. ME3 is 8.5/10 for me.
I suppose that means I like ME2 the best, right? No. I like 3 more, because the gameplay -the crux of whether or not a game is worth playing- is tighter and more fluid. Mass Effect 3 for me.
Now, if ME4 has the same care shown to the plotting in 1, and the same attention to detail in presentation as in 2 (dat soundtrack!), and fluid gameplay like 3s, I'll be one happy camper.

Count one more person to the ME 2 crowd.
It wasn't from the start, but it grew on me. Some changes I had to get used to after just having finished part 1: Why can't i pick up anything anymore? Why do I only have those few skills? Where's the triangle crosshairs? But in the long run, interfacing with the game worked better than ME 1. And going back to ME 1 showed me how I didn't miss constantly fiddling with x gear screens to choose a good weapon, armour, universal tool ... for Shepard and the squad, at all.
Plotwise it was similar. First impression was: Wait, is this whole game about recruiting a team? When do I actually get to do anything? Once again, the crew grew on me. Just look at how different these people are, and their outlooks on life: Angry and self-protective Jack who didn't dare trust anybody and could, for the first time in her life, be among people she could trust to the very end (if you played as a paragon). Too bad a Femshep could only gently nudge her on a way that might heal her, not actually see Jack making a dramatic development to the better like Brosheps. Mysterious Thane who was both a very skilled and dangerous man (kind of - he-lizard?) but had a poet's sensitive heart and some regrets about his past life. Ever-calm Samara who seemed unfazed by anything, living in her strictly-prescribed ways, to reveal a tormented soul. And so on. These characters felt quite alive and well-contrasted, so it was entertaining after all, even with not that much of a plot. And not trying to enable Bioware here to sell even more stuff as DLC, but the ones I got for ME 2 were interestingly different.
As for the missions, 2 of them were especially memorable: Haestrom - I loved the atmosphere. Somehow it was both relaxing and dangerous: The music and the deserted artificially-created landscape bathed in deadly late-afternoon sunlight, with Geth keeping the squad on their feet. And everybody's favourite, the suicide mission. Don't need to say more about that one, I guess.
