ME1 is the best, ME3 is the worst at everything.

ME2 is my favorite. The classes are much better balanced against each other and Shepard is much better balanced against the enemies. I love the wide variety of squadmates to choose from. I enjoy the story of working for the bad guys to fight an even greater threat. The final mission felt like a worthy pay-off to all the effort of recruiting the team.
And... it gave us Miranda,

Mass Effect 1 I've played so many times I can't even care to count. It was awesome and yeh it was that special introduction to the ME universe.
ME2 was fun and did have better controls but I've only played through that a couple of times.
But then ME3. Well when it just came out the internet was all over it with negativity and what I iniatially heard about the story was rather disappointing to me. So I started the game but lost interest frankly...until last week. I started fresh and OMG what a blast it was. The story was heavy but amazing and at the end, well I just realised that what I had heard about it, wasn't actually true.
So, that'll teach me to listen to other people lol.
But yeh currently I think ME3 is totally amazing and once the story has settled in a bit more I dare say I'd pick this one up a few more times

Mass Effect 1 has the exploration part, some nice sidequests and an enjoyable story. The combat was a bit meh though.
I really missed the exploring in ME 2 & 3 and the Citadel sidequests in part 3 were horrible.
They all have their pros and cons, so I can't really choose tbh.

ME1.
Best writing, most coherent, and felt like an rpg rather than an interactive comic book.

my love of me2 knows no boundaries
, I enjoyed jumping on planet to planet to solve a mystery or to beat something, kind of reminded me of kotor.
Granted its appeal has diminished some what because of me3 railroading of "choices" but that is hardly me2 fault

IMO ME3 is my favorite. I loved the majority of the story, the gameplay is vastly superior to the first two games, the focus on improved weapons and power combos, and most importantly multiplayer. I still play through single player from time to time, but multiplayer is the main thing that has kept me playing since launch. I don't consider it a perfect game - I feel that the ending could have been better and I think it is the weakest game when it comes to squad mates - but I would have to say it's one of the best games I have ever played.
I still loved ME1 and 2. ME1 had a great story, Saren is my favorite villain in the trilogy (although that doesn't say much), and it was a great introduction to the series; however, the gameplay was the most frustrating and was not very fluid. ME2 was my first real introduction to the series (I actually started with ME2 and then played ME1 later to better understand the story). ME2's gameplay was a huge improvement over the first game, the squad mates were by far the best, and the story was still very good, although I'm my opinion isn't as good as ME1 and ME3.
All three games are fantastic, and even though each game has its strengths and weaknesses, they all hold a special place in my heart and the franchise as a whole is my favorite of all time. I just hope Bioware can continue to improve the experience in the future installments.

Leaning toward saying ME2 and ME3 are my favorites. ME1 had a good soundtrack, great story, and one of the better endings, but some of the Mako missions were just SO tedious, and many of the side-quests seemed repetitive, similar to each other, and often lacked substantial connection with the main story or even a sense of overall direction.
ME2 had the best soundtrack, bar none. It also brings great new characters like Legion, EDI, and Miranda, and felt more epic. Shadow Broker DLC was decent. On the downside, some of the crew members were fairly dull, like Kasumi. Another downside is that you don't get Legion as a squadmate until fairly late in the game, unless you go to the derelict reaper before you've done all the loyalty missions and consequently screw up your save's usefulness for importing into ME3. The persuade system seemed like the worst in this game too - more or less forcing you to roleplay as almost entirely Paragon or almost entirely Renegade, and making it difficult to be Paragon when you want to, and Renegade when it was warranted while still being able to make important persuade checks like Jack/Miranda, Tali/Legion, and Zaeed (if playing Paragon). Seemed to present lots of opportunities to learn about Reapers, Protheans, and Collectors, and generally expand on that lore quite a bit.
ME3 was less epic than ME2, the soundtrack wasn't even close to being as good as ME2, or even as good as ME1 for that matter...and James Vega was largely a pretty annoying squadmate who never seemed to have anything to say that's worth listening to, which shouldn't surprise anyone, considering he looks like a steroid junkie. Frankly, I'm not even sure why BioWare decided to put him in the game. Vega looks and sounds so stupid he makes some Krogan seem intelligent by contrast. Wrex was a much more enjoyable character to have around, and offered much more intelligent dialog than Vega, especially in ME1. On the plus side, EDI becomes a squadmate finally, has a pretty cool story arc, and some nice outfits. Javik's discussion with Liara about the Prothean tendencies to nurture developing civilizations prior to their downfall was interesting, as was the additional data on the Quarian/Geth conflicts obtained from Legion.
Despite ME3 having some pretty good missions in the middle of the game though... like the Quarian/Geth story, or the Javik/Prothean/Liara lore, and EDI story arc, the ending just wasn't quite as epic as ME2, and the soundtrack didn't quite measure up. Overall, ME2 was probably one of the best. Hard to compete with such an
epic game that has so few substantial shortcomings and many strengths
such as its incredible story and stellar soundtrack.
