I have all my Mass Effect 1 saves now on a Xbox Memory Unit. When I put in Mass Effect 2 will I have any problems loading my old Mass Effect 1 saves?

I'm not 100% sure but I think I read in an interview that the saves have to be on the hard drive they were played on, not a MU.

How do you get the Wrex picture?

Is your Xbox profile on the memory card or a hard drive? If your profile is on the hard drive, then they won't transfer over. If your profile is on the memory unit, then you're fine.

I will put my Xbox profile on the Memory Card with my Mass Effects 1 saves. Then I will cross my fingers and hopes it all works out. Thanks for the info guys

It is? I was under the impression that your Xbox profile had to be on the hard drive as well? And even if the profile you played ME 1 is ok on your MU, wouldn't the game saves and things still have to be on a hard drive?

Everything has to be on the hard drive it was created, so I think if it was created on a MU it would be ok, but if you physically transferred it from the harddrive to the MU, then it will not work.

It's pretty easy to copy/move your old saves to the harddrive anyway. If you don't have a HDD, then you might be screwed.

It's from your HDD, just like your starting a new game with an old character in ME1, so I think that it has to be on your HDD.

Something similiar happened to me.
I started with a Xbox Arcade so I used my MU as storage device.
Played ME1 on it and had all my saves and profile there.
Then I bought a 60gb HDD and transferred everything on it, my Live profile included.
What happens now?
It was my mistake (I couldn't know the consequences though), but I find it pretty stupid to force people to keep locked all their files and don't let them move them freely between their devices..
3 years have passed since ME1 came out, in 3 years everything can happen (broken HD/MU, new storage devices, upgrading console, and so on..).. anyway that's only my personal rant..
Another question...
This file we're (hopefully) going to transfer to ME2 is generated the moment you start a career in ME1 or when you complete the game?
If I can't transfer my file anymore.. can I delete that file, load my last saved game, complete the game and then get a new file?
I know, maybe it's stupid and useless but I have no idea how it works...

According on the Mass Effect 2's FAQ - http://www.masseffect.com/info/faq/:
"Your save games must exist on the original storage device that was used when you played through and completed Mass Effect 1. This can be on a MU or on the Xbox 360 hard drive"

I've read it..but they could have said that earlier and not 3 days before the release..
This isn't a silly matter, considering how many people are complaining here about the same problem.
Anyway I realized that I still have the save games on my MU, hope it will be enough..

Indeed. I've got exactly the same problem. I beat ME1 on my brother's Xbox back home, and when I went back home over Christmas transferred my save files to my MU so that I could have them here for Mass Effect 2. This is something the needed to be addressed long before the game came out, not just a few days.
I'm just hoping that reloading from my last save, and beating the game again will work, otherwise I'll be pretty annoyed. I put a lot of time into one specific character, and I would really like to keep playing that character...

I played through and beat ME 1 on my 360. It got broken when I went on my last Deployment. It won't read any games anymore. I got a sweet laptop though and was wondering if their is a way to transfer the save files from the 360 to the laptop and start ME 2 off on my laptop... Any tech savvy folks got any help for me?

I recently got a new Xbox 360 console and I have my HDD from my previous console. The HDD contains my Gamer Profile and my ME save games and I did the license transfer. I have no DLC for my ME game. Will my save games still be importable for ME 2?

I had my mass effect saves on my 20 gig hard drive. Then moved my saves to my MU. I ended up getting a elite and moved my Mass Effect saves from my MU to my new Hard Drive. Will I still be able to transfer my Mass Effect 1 saves to ME2?

Now, don't quote me on this, but I think I may have found a workaround to this problem, just based on experimentation.
I had my last saves from several playthroughs (in all of which I had completed the game), yet I realized that I could start a New Game+... However, after reloading my last save and beating the game again, I could go New Game+...
Now, I don't know if that will work for importing a save file to ME2, but it certainly makes me hopeful...
Even so, last afternoon I came up with an even better solution. I was looking at my X360, and said 'screw it, I'm going to just beat the whole game again, just in case..."
Now I'm just about to go to the creepy overgrown world (for fear of spoilers, even though I'm pretty sure anybody who cares about this thread has already beaten the game... several times.)
I hope this helps (and I hope I'm right about it...)

It is really simple actually.
Everytime you beat ME1 a special end game save is created (right before the credits). This save is stored somewhere deep inside the Xbox's file system so you cannot manully extract/copy/move it without an HDD transfer kit. This however is the file used for importing your character.
So if you beat ME1 on HDD1 and move your gameprofile as well as all your saves to a MU you would not copy our special end game save. It would still remain on HDD1.
If you then copy your gamertag and save files from your MU to HDD2 you still cannot import a character in ME2. You'd have to load one of your close to end saves and beat ME1 again thus creating another special end game save on HDD2. And voila, you can import your character in ME2.
To check if you have the special end game save (since you cannot see it in the Xbox's dashboard) just start a new game on ME1 and select existing ID. If you are able to choose the character you want to import into ME2 you are good to go. Otherwise just beat the game again with a close to end save game.
Hope that clears things up.

Thank you Masterkajo!
I really hope you're right about this!
I have a save game right before the final battle so it shouldn't be a big deal!

This worked for me! I had my old 20GB hard drive that I used for ME 1... put it in my xbox, loaded up ME 2 and sure enough... there was my character!

This is absolute bull****! Why the hell would Bioware/EA do something stupid like creating this magical end game save? If you have a playthrough save on your HDD, regardless of whether or not it is from your current HDD, you should be able to import your character.

This is garbage. So now everyone that had a RRoD between when they finished ME1 and started ME2, and who no longer have a copy of ME1 are completely screwed, even if they still have their ME1 saved games like I do. I would never have bought ME2 in the first place if I knew I couldn't import my old ME1 game. To make things worse, no one has a used copy of ME1 in stock in my area. Bioware better fix this for us. I won't buy ME3 if they don't fix this, because I'm sure they'll be some sort of bonus or achievement for playing one character through all 3 games, which is now impossible for some of us.

This really shouldn't be hard to fix, just adjust the game so that it doesn't require this "secret" savefile to import. Or offer us a free download of ME1 that only works for a few days just so that we can re-defeat Saren. I swear, they have almost ruined ME2 for me before I even started playing.
