I only ever play ME1 with my profile and game save on an MU. How is it that my save file does not appear for import?
I am in the middle of a second play through, and no longer have my "close to end" file of the first play through.

And that is the smoking gun along with this really out of the way post which reads:EMTMarine wrote...

The profile and save data must be present on the hard drive and not an
MU.
Now compare the above hidden-in-the-forums info with what's listed in the Mass Effect 2 FAQs:
Q: How does the save import work?[*]If you played Mass Effect 1, and kept your save game files,
you will be able to continue your progress in Mass Effect 2. You will
be able to select the import on a by career basis. From the main menu,
start a new game then choose to Import ME1 character. The save game
import utility will walk you through the rest, including giving you
basic information on the save file. For example, did you save the
council, did Wrex survive, what was your character level, and more. On
PC there is a Configuration Utility that will help you locate and import
your ME1 save games. On Xbox 360 all you need is the gamer profile and
save games to get started.[/list]When they want to sell you the game, they tell you one thing. When you run into trouble and start digging thru the support forums, that's when you get the surprise that you've been suckered and will now have to replay (and for some rebuy) the game, spending needless hours regrinding a TWO YEAR OLD GAME instead of enjoying the NEW GAME you just paid a chunk of money for.
Bottom Line: Bioware lied to us. They lied to our faces and buried the inconvenient truths well out of sight. Perhaps they'll be too busy counting their money to notice the anguish of those ripped off by their deception. The worst part of this mess? I can't even unload the game on Craig's List or someplace because the first thing I did was enter the Cerebus code when asked, so now the poor sod who buys it from me will have to shell out $15 more or I'll have to eat that amount to make it fair.
$56 for the game. $15 lost in selling it off. I just paid $15 to have my gaming experience ruined and three hours of angry frustration. Thanks Bioware! I was looking forward to Mass Effect 2 and The Old Republic, which would've been my first MMORPG. Now I have to walk away from the games I enjoyed or looked forward to because you simply couldn't tell the truth and make the advertised feature work.
Shame on you. Hope the payoff was worth it.

so let me get this straight... I have my saved games on the same hard drive that I am using for ME2, but because I played through a second time in ME1 I won't be able to import my character?
Im confused though because I still have my final saves from ME1 when you face Saren in the Citadel. Shouldnt the xbox be able to use those at the least?
Anyone having this same problem who has managed to figure it out?

ok, here's my story. At first the import utility could not find my ME1 saves. So I read somewhere that when you finish the ME1 game, there should be an autosave and it should say 'Citadel Tower'. So I went to check and I didn't have that autosave even though I know I've finished the ME1 game. I'm thinking that because I played the DLC missions for ME1 right after I finished the ME1 game and the autosave I had when I finished the game got overwritten. Good thing I had a saved game where right before the final battle with Saren. So I load that up and finished the game and let the end credits roll and sure enough, a new autosave appears that says 'Citadel Tower'. So I load the ME2 and tried the import utility again and lo and behold! My ME1 character shows up. So I guess and maybe, the main thing here is you gotta have that Autosave file right after you finish the ME1 in order to be able to import. Try it!

I had RROD on my original 360 and got a replacement system. Recently I upgraded to the Elite and used the transfer kit to transfer the information on my original hard drive to the new one. ME2 recognized and imported my two characters I had finished the game with with no problem.

THANK YOU!!!
I'm in the same position and I was wondering if transfering the data would have a negative impact - you just made my evening!

This is Bulls**t. I have my saved game and profile but since my xbox died for the fith time and I upgraded to an elite 360 I transfered my files using a MU my files will not work, now I have to buy and replay ME1 to use a feature that was pretty much the main selling point of the new game. Srew you BioWare you were my favorite developer since Balders Gate on the PC now that you have sold your souls to EA you have turned to S**T. I hope you do a bang up job selling whatever future games you plan on putting out in the future because I sure as hell am no longer a supporter of your products you filthy thieves.

my 360 got RROD and I bought a new one, then transfered my files with a MU to the new HDD
after that, I began a new playthrough using the old save
I played the 2nd playthrough from beginning to end with this new console, but the first one I played on the old console
can I use at least the second save? when I put ''use existing ID'' it shows me 2 options from the career

I uh, just wanted to say that I had no trouble at all importing to ME2 and my saves are from both an old xbox that rrod'd AND an older, smaller HDD that I used the transfer cable on.
In fact, I'm more annoyed that I still can't remove unwanted character files.

Here's my story: Beat ME1 on my room mates Xbox/Profile. Bought an Elite after he moved out and made sure to copy all of my ME1 save files to a MU. Then tried transferring the saves over to my profile. And it won't work, just like everyone else here. So am I completely hosed? I still have ME1 but I don't wanna have play through it again. Call me lazy I guess.
Why isn't there some kind of thing at the beginning of the game that lets me tell it what I did in the last? Doesn't the PC version have this? Why can't I just tell the game that I went straight Paragon (didn't kill Wrex, saved the Citadel, etc.)?

You're not the only one... can't believe I didn't try the D-pad. But my guess is that a lot of other people have done exactly the same thing - neither analog stick does anything, which is odd, plus the display has 'valid mission complete files' at the top in the same green colour as the first game save. Logical conclusion when it seems like you can't scroll is that all the others are invalid somehow and hence can't be selected. That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.
At least now I can stop replaying from a previous save on Ilos. (Side note: boy, the combat has improved. But I miss my Adept's non-universal cooldown...)

Why can't I import mmy ****ing ME1 game save?!
I just rebought ME1, whacked it in, redownloaded Bring Down the Sky, loaded it up, Resume Game, Shepard is on Level 51, a little way in to a second run through, save the game on a different save file, load up ME2, Star New Career, Import ME1, No Character Data found.

Then krogan's are frakkin smart.
I know this post is old, but I just replayed through ME1 and was pissed because I couldn't get the saves to load. Who thinks to use the D-pad when the analog stick doesn't work? Apparently, those brainy krogan do.
You saved me.
