The gameplay trailer looks like a single player action RPG.

Indeed, since when? Despite the flashy animations, DA2 played almost identicle to DA:O also, it's very far away from the twitch mechanics we've seen so far.

On PC, maybe, but not on consoles.

no consoles played the same too

IIRC there was a bug that was never fixed for the consoles that required for the player to mash away at buttons. On the PC, however, this was not the case.

so I have a magic xbox? good to know

Well, the dragon age franchise is a single player action-RPG franchise.

Since when? As far as I know, DA:O was never marketed as an action game.

Maybe because I am old and crochety, but in my opinion, DA2 played a crap ton differently on PC from DA:O.

R R R R R R R R R R R  R R R R R  R R RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

DA:O :Point ,click, Character auto attacks.
DA2: Point , click, Chracter auto attacks flashier and faster.

HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!

You missed the memo... It's been long time fixed.

I don't know if it's possible to get more 'hack and slashy' than DA2.

On PC, TW2 is a pretty clear example of what more hack and slash than DA2 would be.

TW is twitch, always has been. DA2 was trying to emulate the style of popular action games, and looked ridiculous for doing so.

Did you even play DA2? You missed the fact that everything is on auto attack? It was just faster.

Yes, played it, in all its 'splody samurai button-pressing awesomeness. I've never called DA twitch. However, DA:I looks to have twitch elements.

Not marketed as an action game.

Seems to me they have always considered them to be ARPGs internally (at least DG thought so), and it shows up in the marketing either directly or indirectly, and arguably in the games themselves, being the subjective label it is. DA2 and DAI, at least, are directly labeled as "action RPGs" in marketing material. And DA2's combat, "flashiness" aside, doesn't play that much fundamentally different from DAO.

Whether DAI has more "twitch" elements or not, hard to tell as far as the PC version goes, but going by the description and videos the console version has more control options than before. It has a dodge roll, which seems to be the obsession here, but as has been said before, I'm not sure that's inherently a bad thing, being debatable as twitchy or even if it is twitchy. I suspect the ship against the dreaded "genre blending" has already sailed and they will continue trying elements of other genres to see what works.

Actually, according to what I was just saying, it's already part of the genre. What am I even saying? They're just doing it right this time.

So you did miss the auto attack. Really, so you were mashing that right mouse over and over button the entire time like Diabilo?

Funny, I clicked on an enemy once and all it did was sit back and did nothing as my character attack it on it's own,...Like everyone else.

You got a bugged copy.

They fixed that bug in the first patch. Still was a bungle, though.

No, I played it like DA:O. But it looked ridiculous, and enemies dropping from the sky seemed a cheap way to achieve difficulty. =]

Lovely way to move the goal post. Yes, the wave combat was horrible.... No one is arguing about that nor is this topic about that.... But I take it we can agree that DA2 is far from twitchy.

I never f*cking said that. I said Bioware wanted to emulate twitchy action games in DA2.

Calm down. Nor did he imply that you said that, slimgrim.

Man, it's like he accused you of killing a kitten :P

Neither DAO or DA2 was really twitch.

DAI looks to be though, unfortunately.

You drew a confusing parallel between twitch and hack and slash. We started talking about hack and slash, then you moved to twitch, so the inference to draw is that you think they're the same thing and that DA2 was twitch.

I'm sure no one here wanted to misinterpreted you; it just sounds from the context that you took hack & slash to mean twitch.

We started with this exchange:

slimgrin wrote...

my response:

Then we moved to this exchange:

my response:
Okay? I'm not contesting anything here, you just asked what more hack & slash than DA2 would be. One answer is TW2. Another is Dark Souls. A third is Dragon's Dogma. A fourth is Skyrim.

Why not an option for either tactical play or action play? Give players control of the camera angels and party settings.

I hope to play a rogue in DA:I and suspect that the gameplay will be even flashier and more actiony.

I'm fine with that.

You're expecting them to make 2 completely different combat systems?  Would be nice and allow them to cater to more different player types but I doubt it.   The only thing I've heard is each platform will have its own interface which is a very different thing.

This seems to be the case (for the camera that is.) If you look at the PAX footage, it seems that scrolling out will give you the default 'DA' third person look, whereas scrolling in will have you play like a third-person ES game.

Camera wise that is...

Damn, I need sleep. But this info is too much!
