Obligotory staff just wasn't enough huh? I just... why?? How does a book help to channel energies of the fade?
A spell book... Seriously?

It has instructions. I believe that particular book was the Tevinter Enchanter's Manual: How to Lead From the Back...with Style!
Step One: Assume a moderately menacing pose. If possible, have a hood down, or hair obscuring face.
Step Two: This step is optional, but it is recommended to cackle sinisterly or say something ominous to your foes.
Step Three: Cast your spell.

Yeah, I am hoping there is a book toggle, so I don't have to look at that animation when I play as a mage. Of all the footage I have seen now, the floating book is the only thing I don't like.

Maybe it could be an off-hand weapon for mage instead of just staff. I hope there would be floating orb or skull as well. It would be awesome.

It's not like we haven't seen spellbooks before. Flemeth had two, Tarohne in DA2 had one, you had to destroy like five blood magic books in DA2..

I guess maybe that's the style they decided to take mages in after DA:O's dresses and staff poking and DA:II's ninja-staffing and coats. Seems a little too...traditional for my liking.

The Inquisitor's a worrywart and super neurotic, even though they've cast that spell a hundred, times, they need to look it up every time to make sure it looks right, wasting mana on levitating the book in the process.

Vivienne doesn't have the book animation. Maybe a mage specialization?

One of the best new animation so far, IMO.

I have mixed feelings about the book... On one hand, it looks cool, but I can't imagine a really good mage needing to read instructions in the middle of a battle.

It's more of a focus tool. Usually with some enchantments for enhancement.
Edit: Okay, I see what you mean. But a book is kinda awkward.

That was not the Inquisitor, Laidlaw confirmed it was an enemy. Whether our PC can use books is still to be seen, many enemies in DAII used weapons and tactics we hadn't access to.

No idea. Imo staff should be an optional melee weapon of a mage, that doesn't give any magic stats.

It's at the1:30 mark in this video.
From this footage, it's not clear if the mage is in the midst of battle or if he/she is conjuring/casting for a different reason altogether.
Personally, I think it looks nifty.
