This is why I don't play mages, I guess. The robes and staves were trope-y enough.
There is this very old game called Hellgate London, and it's a pretty boring and crappy game, but the way they designed mages was one of the best I have ever seen. Cool armors + fast and muscle like spell casts like you described:

I have a feeling it's not an ordinary weapon option considering it looks like he needs to go through some kind of incantation ritual just to get the book ready? Or was he casting a spell with that animation? (but I didn't see any results from it)

It's awesome, not silly. This is why we can't have nice things.
And while the mage looked at the book and casted the spell everybody stood around watching<_<
And what about FF? The meteor shower didn´t seem to have. I hope they don´t repeat DAII with its combat ajusted to no FF.
no FF is cool (it is magic after all - why should something that is intent driven not be able to be used next to your allies, if you don't intend them harm (do you like harming your own party? - seems somewhat sadistic to me!)

agreed - not that i hate staves (as long as they look ok - not like those ugly things in DA2...) but i like variable mages (meaning: different weapons (like that book, orbs, wands, special-gloves - or even no weapons at all (magic should never be tied to a focusing object IMHO) and being able to move (while chanting somehing longer, no standing around vulnerably for enemies to shoot at (or attack otherwise)...)

I guess people were not fan of playing a wizard in D&D? Or you just don't like the book thing in general?
D&D didn´t cast spells directly from the book, in the middle of a fight. You had to learn the spells before going into battle - reason I liked sorcerers more than wizards, less spells but all available instead of maybe finding yourself with no valid spell in a given situation.

In all retrospect I doubt if the system is even remotely similar to the D&D scheme. I think it is just an animation convenience one of the "sustained" abilities. I never really liked wizards anyway haha.

Wizards are usually my favorite class, but so far DA ones just didn´t click. I liked much more HN immersion in the story, or FCE origin itself. About DA2, I tried, but my suspension of disbelief gave up early on Act 2. Let´s see if this one works.

Mages spend their whole lives in the circle studying. A rare few get to leave to assist in issues throughout the land, but they don't prepare themselves for battle constantly. They're scholars.
No, reading a book in battle isn't particularly safe, but that's why mages aren't frontline fighters. Warriors and rogues hold the line while the mage prepares a strong spell to wipe out the opposition. Sure it's a bit cliche, but doing something the traditional way doesn't make it bad.

Obligotory staff just wasn't enough huh? I just... why?? How does a book help to channel energies of the fade?
Well, we don't know the entire context of the book. Its certainly a large jump from DA:O and DAII's simply pointing staves at things and FLAME ON!
I'll assume we'd get info about it like we eventually will about how Red Lyrium is not a common enough thing to have Red Templars.

Evidently - all those books are for dwarven female non-mages.

Mages aren't frontliners, no, but they aren't miles away from the battle either. It's incredibly stupid to have them take out a book, take the time to levitate it, and read it before casting a spell while fighting. If anything, this should be done while in a safe environment, while learning a skill, similar to the skill tomes in Origins.
