It is very silly, yes. And can someone please tell me how it's smart, logical, or tactical to start reading a book while in the middle of fight. I'm curious.

If the magic isn't just in the words, but the book itself, so you need to read the words to activate the book's power. Or maybe the incantations are magically impossible to memorize.

I loooveee it. I have a weakness for spellbooks and orbs. =L Always wished that a mage Warden had their own grimoire. I'm all for floaty books.<3

It can be rationalized I suppose. But...it's just...no. We've never seen magic like that before. To do it now seems like an asspull. It may look cool, but in my opinion it doesn't fit the setting. It looks like something straight out of WoW. Or Harry Potter.

I don't think it's that out of place, since the most distinctive feature of the Circle Tower is its freaking gigantic library. And a lot of books do seem to explain how certain magic works, hence the implication that Jowan learned blood magic from the book Irving had on his desk, or that book about spirit healing with Anders scribbles... etc.

I think it looks kind of awkward the way it's prepped hovering over it on the ground like it's The Precious or something. But after it's activated and just hovers there while the mage moves, it looks fairly neat. Still think it'd be better, say, in the mage's hand, or floating in front of him so he doesn't have to look at the floor to read it...

And not having pages flying out in every direction while casting would be nice.

Didn't one of the devs say that was just an enemy mage fodder?

I don't think our Inquisitor will be able to do such a thing.

The first spellcaster in the video isn't using a book, though. So my guess is that the book is just somehting for that particular spellcaster an not something that the mage inquisitor usually requires in combat.

But I thought the book looked awesome, I don't have a problem with it.

Haha it all makes sense now. A book mage killed Cassandra's family. That's why she's always stabbing them.

I'm sorry, I'm just not seeing it.

I would only buy it if the mage does it when learning a skill, similar to how skill tomes worked in Origins. That levitating/reading thing should never be used in combat. Ever.

Well if you're not going to explain, I guess for balance I'll just say mages should be forced to carry around that floating book at all times. Five of them.

Are you really griping and complaining about something that was totally awesome? I loved the use of a spell book in combat for mages! It was an extra detail that makes it look and feel exciting. It makes sense since not all mages would memorize every spell known to mankind. Again, you don't know all the details of the lore as found in DAI because you haven't played the game. That Fade Tear may have altered things. Give is a chance. It might surprise you.

It makes no sense what so ever. Mages don't memorize anything, they command the raw energies of the fade, that even reacts to their emotions. There are no set spells, no required verbal and somatic components, it is all left to mages imagination ( limited spell variety is a gameplay logical box ).

*Cough* Blood magic *cough* rituals *cough* any other extreme methods like summoning* cough* require time, incantations, and study *cough*
In short yes mages actually need to memorize and not just go all willy nilly hence different levels of blood magice being logged away.

Can we all understand that it was an ENEMY UNIT that was shown doing this and not any companion or pc doing this.

But if a human enemy can use that spell, I want it.

I thought it looked neat as well and a little bit extra special feature that may be given to mages maybe. (Like a tome item or something) Either way my post was mainly directed at all the nit pickers that these videos have attracted and now plague the BSN. Complaining for the sake of complaining on features that can change almost entirely before the release due to the 1+ development time. Everything that we saw in the vids can and will probably change to some extent.

We have no context for that animation. It could be a sustained spell (like the whisp) which was activated before the fight, and that it *could* gives a boost to fire damage. For the boost to work, words must be read from tome tome before the spell being cast. I'd like more info before passing judgement. As an animation, I really like it. Looks much better then just waiving hands in the air whilst preparing a big spell.

It's stupid regardless of who's doing it. And I'm tired of enemy mages breaking lore.

^ This. I think if it was a sustained spell/or a item (tome) that mages can hold that it would be an easy explanation for it.

How was it breaking lore? We know next to nothing of these particular enemy mages which may have learned magic in a way that is totally different than typical circle mages. I think all the people point and yelling "lore-breaking" are jumping way to fast to conclusions.

Okay. Just know that I don't mind discussing it with you. I just got a bit confused. That's all. :)

Yeah, they probably went to the same magic school as those teleporters from DA2. <_<

I'm sorry, I just don't think it's as deep as that. I'm just going by experience. Lately enemy mages have been able to do things we can't do, and they all break lore. It'd be a pleasant surprise if there were some backstory to it, but I have serious doubt when it comes to enemy mages and unique spells.
