Okay. Just know that I don't mind discussing it with you. I just got a bit confused. That's all. :)

How was it breaking lore? We know next to
nothing of these particular enemy mages which may have learned magic in
a way that is totally different than typical circle mages.
I think all
the people point and yelling "lore-breaking" are jumping way to fast to
conclusions.

Yeah, they probably went to the same magic school as those teleporters from DA2. <_<

I'm sorry, I just don't think it's as deep as that. I'm just going by experience. Lately enemy mages have been able to do things we can't do, and they all break lore. It'd be a pleasant surprise if there were some backstory to it, but I have serious doubt when it comes to enemy mages and unique spells.

Sorry, double post. :pinched:

Considering that a lot of knowledge about magic  has been lost over time as well as can't be fully explained (Blood Magic for one or Arcane Warriors) I am not surprised that there would be those who may have vast knowledge when we don't.

The Old Gods taught blood magic to the Magisters, right? And the history of Arcane Warriors was explained in Origins. It's something the elves came up with.

I feel the need to point out the lorewise they never teleported. they just cast invisibility and run to a new spot, like the rogues with the smoke bombs. not really a good reason but it works with the lore.

Yeah but the knowledge of both is vastly unknown or lost. And very few people know of either fully. Most of the blood magic used in DA2 was the very basics of blood magic that Imperium/Tevinter mages would probably laugh at.

Is blinking breaking the lore? I can kind of consider blinking and teleporting to be different to a degree.

That sounds like a very poor excuse to me. It really does. I didn't even know invisibility spells existed in Thedas!

Okay, you have a point there. But it still feels like something Bioware pulled out of their ass. We'll see. :P

I mean look at the Dalish and even Merrill.  The Dalish fell a part like Rome and lost a lot of knowldge. Merrill in concerns of blood magic didn't know what she was even doing most of the time with it. I mean look at the Dreamers which hardly any one knows what their power is like and that it can only be explained as being ridiculously powerful and dangerous to the point where they can manipulate and hop in and out of the Fade at will.

I remember discussing with Shale how Wilhelm had magics he could use to conceal himself in the deep roads. I don't recall if she directly said 'invisibility' or if it was more ambiguous.

Oh, I definitely agree with you that there is magic out there that is lost and very old. And Merrill's an idiot.

Honestly though, someone like Flemeth should be the only one still alive to the type of magic you're referring to. Or possibly Magisters. You do have me interested in that mystery book mage though. I hope his faction has interesting magic....though why levitating and burning books is a part of it, I'll never figure out on my own.

But the book thing...I just can't get with it. I watched the video again. It does look cool. I would be okay with it if the freakin book didn't follow him at the end. That was so stupid I can't even.

Maybe it's a way for weak mages to unleash powerful spells? The power and knowledge is confined in the book?

indeed - but then it is illogical that we win against those people (it should be almost impossible to kille Tevinter-Magister for example as they know a lot more then you do (having access to things the chantry forbids, that the circles do not know, that have been forgotten etc. and to top it off, all magisters (at least that is implied) are blood-mages (and blood-magic on its own is very powerfull and that kind of magic does have at least as many secrets as the normal kind))

greetings LAX

If the book animation were to be used before battle, I could see it working, or maybe being used during the more complex and powerful spells to give the casting time a reason to be so long (besides the fact that spamming high-level spells is a win button). However, if the fighting is going to remain as fast-paced and frenzied as it was in DAII, holding the book would just look.... silly, IMO.

It's not like we haven't seen spellbooks before. Flemeth had two, Tarohne in DA2 had one, you had to destroy like five blood magic books in DA2..

Yeah, but to use them in the middle of combat?  That's just plain silly right there.

Agreed - I thought it looked fantastic and so few games do that. Recently Riot put out a new League of Legends video and it has a great scene with Ryze channeling some major spells from his book.

It's something that's so underused but is great - and I don't think you should look at it as "Oh, what, did he forget his spell again?" as much as in many of these fantasy universes [D&D included] the book itself IS a source of power. It's not just "Hey, this holds all the spells I know!" as much as it can literally help to fuel the mage's magics.

I for one welcome our new spellbook using overlords...

Oh my f*cking god. Do some of you even listen to yourselves? You're such nitpicking nerds, I can't even sit back and lurk anymore. What the hell is the matter with some of you? The spell book isn't *realistic* enough because boo-hoo :::insert absurd over-analysis of a flipping video game:::

Gee I'm so sorry that the incredibly high budget, over-produced, next gen game is coming up so short for you! Prepare to painfully suspend your disbelief boys and girls: THEY'VE SUPPLIED A SPELLBOOK. Wow!!

Meanwhile in Syria....

It's not about realism, it's about spellbook being completely odd/uncalled for/useless/diminishing mage power feeling/sudden uneeded change/looking bad and goofy etc etc.
But that's my opinion, since I started the thread.

To me a spellbook for a Dragon age mage is something almost on par with a purple ****** from saints row.
