Also, Dalish is my favorite Origin, so I'm not too bothered if this is the case.

I think they might make the mage elf dalish and the warrior/rogue city elf, since they were talking about making different backgrounds for each mage class.
I'd be happy that, because I will play every class anyway. I just want to get to be a CE - I'm happy to stick with human and Kossith for mages.

It doesn't really bother me. I would rather be a city elf, but we get to define our character's so It won't be like we are forced to be anti-human or anything. I also don't think I've ever seen a customisable protagonist have the option of having a welsh voice before. It's an interesting prospect.

I would much prefer this honestly.

I find it very hard to create a character that grows up in a racist society and entirely disavows their racist views. I don't want to create an elven supremacist, but that's what the Dalish are.

Well you could be the oddball in the Dalish Origin in Origins. In Exile wrote...

Well, we played a human in Dragon Age 2, who has grown up in a racist society, and seems to be able to disavow their racist views or never had them.
I don't know, it seems to be down to the dalish elf in question. Some are very racist, others like Marethari or Merrill don't seem to be very racist at all. You could roleplay your Elf similar to Merrill: One who ends up being disillusioned by the Dalish after seing their society from a fresh perspective.
Perhaps your elf was saved by a human in the past, or had a similar experience which gives them a different persepctive of the human race. The joy of more vague backgrounds is that you can fill in the gaps to justify why your charcter behaves the way you want them to.

But Hawke doesn't grow up racist.

Merril ferverntly believes in Dalish views about the elves. She believes they were once immortal, in their gods, etc. That's not the kind of elf I want to play.

The "joy" of a vague background is finding out 5 hours into the game that you've been railroaded because the developers assumed things about you they negelcted to tell you, like KoTOR 2.

You can play a human who, despite growing up in a society where you are constantly told about the maker and Andraste, can be skeptical about his existence. I don't see why you couldn't be an elf who has similar skepticism.
Also, I don't think Merrill is a very strong believer in all of that, or at least it was never specified. She said in one conversation with Sebastian "Your Maker is just a story you use to explain this world. We have our own stories, we don't need yours". It seems vague if she fully believes those stories are true.
I wasn't talking about her religious views anyway. Just how she grew to dislike her clan and, if you take the rivalry path, dalish in general.

I can't remember much about KoTOR 2 at all, so I don't know what your referring to. I was merely giving you suggestions as to why your Dalish PC may not hold racist views. The idea of one who has had positive experiences with humans in the past is a good example of how you could play one who doesn't hold some of the Dalish's views. My Dalish Elf in Origins got along with humans just fine, and held relatively lax views even in her Origin segment.

Not all the Dalish in the games are racist...

But I can definitely understand not wanting to be forced into a specific background that seems so fundamental to the character's identity.

I think it would be really fun to play a Dalish mage -- we've never had the chance to be one before.

My second full game was a mage elf that I headcanoned as a city elf, seeing as it's unlikely a Dalish would have been taken to the circle, and he was much more a snot about being a mage than about being an elf unless someone else brought it up. He didn't even mind the circle until late in the game where he came to appreciate his freedom much more.
I'd like the choice to pick city, circle, or Dalish elf background, but I am also very pliable and build my character's personality as I go rather than starting full cloth with everything defined, so I will be flexible enough to work with the choices I do get.
It is far and away still better than only being able to play a human (I play a human in real life, I prefer my fantasy critters in games),
My stance is just wait and see. Perhaps class does restrict background (since it did in Origins as well, but very cleverly), or perhaps by the time the game is released, my mage can be any of the three available (or even four if they give us an apostate option besides Dalish).
I am totally cool with either option.
