I'd have no problem with the elven mage only being Dalish.

I would actually prefer that. I don't want my elven rogue to be Dalish, but a Dalish mage seems more interesting to me than a City Elf mage.

It's the only way: the only alternative to give it a different background to that of any other "standard" circle mage or "on-the-run apostate" is to make it be a Dalish apostate, which means a First or whatnot.

I played the dalish origin story in DA:O as a mage thanks to a mod and it felt rather good and natural.

I prefer a City Elf background to a Dalish one - I'd rather be the upstart from the wrong side of the tracks, like my Warden, than a nomadic separatist. That said, I don't mind so much if you're forced into being Dalish for an elven mage background, as long as they don't do they same for warriors and rogues.

Kind of makes sense that a default background for a elven mage would be Dalish.
They are outside the bounds of what's happening with the Mages/Templars, while a CE would already have been circle bound/apostate.

(and I loved the Dalish origin in DA:O, first time I played it I was a 'hate all humas, don't want to leave my clan, WHERE IS TAMLIN!!!' ....Duncan telling me that I'm going even if he has to tie me up and drag me to Ostagar (epic)....I will admit to getting misty eyes (okay, crying) while walking up that hill leaving my family's camp)

Same.  I actually felt that it made a lot of sense as the Dalish Warden is the child of a Keeper.

It would make sense, and give the elf mage and human mage noticeably different backgrounds. In DAO, wasn't a lot of the "HEY YOU ARE AN ELF" things overwritten by "HEY YOU ARE A MAGE"? This might be their work-around.

Also, Dalish is my favorite Origin, so I'm not too bothered if this is the case.

I agree with this lady

Pretty much this. It doesn't make sense to be a city elf mage because they'd pretty much just be a circle mage. lol

I would love that, Dalish was my favourite origin, and I'd like to play an elven mage whose culture isn't automatically 'mage culture', same as an human mage.

Also, I doubt you'd have to have an Irish/Welsh accent if you didn't want it - clans are so diverse, they probably cover all the accents under the sun.

I think because of the melding of cultures involved with the City Elves, having us be a mage would be little different than playing a human apostate and the whole mage thing taking precedence, if that makes sense. However, as a Dalish mage, we have a completely different identity to the other mages and elves and both lend themselves to form something nice. I think that's the reason none of our full companions have been Dalish warriors or rogues, Dalish mages are just more interesting.

I feel alone in saying I actually liked the Andrastian / Circle / City Elf Mage. =/

I actually thought it was very interesting to explore the cultural ramifications of being a mage and an elf raised in a non-magic human's world. You've also got less of a personal identity and sense of belonging than anyone else, since your elven heritage separates you from humans, your human upbringing separates you from other elves (as community is very important to their culture) and mage heritage separates you from non-mages. You also have to live with being preached at by non-magic humans templars about how mages enslaved the world long ago, when a) your people were enslaved right alongside non-magic humans, B) the people preaching at you are enslaving you right now. To be blunt, you're f*cked on all sides, so I think exploring how your character responds and reacts to these injustices can be very fascinating.

With that said, I'm glad there's also a Dalish Mage option. Heck, even if they force elven mages to be Dalish, I won't mind too much. We've played the Andrastian Mage Elf before, but not a Keeper's First, so this will be fascinating. ^_^

EDIT: I hope we aren't forced to be Dalish for warriors or rogues though. Selfishly, I still love City Elves. Image IPB

I am skeptical of the game having so many backstories. I think there will be only four: qunari, elf, human and mage. So all mages share the same backstory. I have been disappointed enough times with bioware to stop being optimistic.

I guess we will see, but i am still betting on a city elf and surface dwarf, because it is the closest thing to being human, thus it is easier to integrate in the story.

The problem is, wouldn't a Dalish elf need a different voice than the Rogue and Warrior elves, unless they are all dalish  elves.

I've always liked the idea of my Dalish elf being a rogue, but being a mage is awesome too. ^__^

I did actually enjoy head-canoning this in my elf mage playthrough on DAO, because it was so unique to the other origins (including the human mage side of the Magi origin). However, I was really disappointed there was no Dalish mage option. Both would be great, but ultimately I'd prefer the Dalish mage since I've never had it before, and prefer Dalish elves.

Personally I just think it'll just be a dialougue option that determines where you come from.

I think they might make the mage elf dalish and the warrior/rogue city elf, since they were talking about making different backgrounds for each mage class.

I would much prefer this honestly.

This makes me wonder what the alternates for a Qunari will be.

Why on earth would you like to play as a slave? Dalish elves are the only true elves.

Embrace your identity and your ancestors, and fight for your very survival.
