Red Lyrium abundance.

Now there are probably hundreds of people with red lyrium and I'm left thinking.... How did they get that much red lyrium?

I'll be surprised if it isn't at least touched on early in the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Inquisition or main Templar Order started digging to try and find out what happened to Meredith and found a vein of the stuff.

Exactly. I figure a foolish bunch of adventurers opened up a previously unknown route into an area with a large supply of a new type of lyrium which proved to be powerful if dangerous. Although monster infested this has subsequently been cleared out and opened up by people with a vested interest in obtaining a supply. (Call this the 'You messed the world up in DA2 more than you thought' theory).

The Red Templars might be eating Meredith for all we know too. Templars just need to take one small potion of (blue) lyrium every week anyway, Meredith would be enough to feed a bunch of them for a while I think.

Side note: That's pure bs I have no idea where all the red lyrium came from.

Reminds me of how aluminum used to be worth more than gold because of how hard it was to get in a pure form. Than comes the Hall–Héroult process of extracting aluminum from minirals and suddenly the stuff becomes ridiculously cheap.

Might tie in to the extremely drastic measures Kal Sharok took to survive the Darkspawn, though I prefer the idea that it ties in with Hawke's expedition into the Thaig. In Exile wrote...
The stone sleeps under Orlais, as that creepy Golem said. It may be that that's where the red lyrium originates, or is plentiful.
Hawke would indeed one of the most important people in DA because she effectively broke the universe.

Reminds me of the movie blood diamond film where the diamond company stores excess diamonds to drive up the price.
to us the audience i red lyrium is rare. Like gold. For all we know there could be the biggest cache of mineral gold that we haven't found yet. Ad yet gold is rare

So after hearing there's going to be an entire faction of Templars that are called 'Red Templars' and they all seem to be sporting red lyrium swords like our favorite nutcase in DA2 had. So immediately after I heard/saw thought that this didn't make any sense at all. Red lyrium to me always seemed like something that was incredibly rare. While you see entire mountains of blue lyrium while the only amount of Red Lyrim we've ever seen in all the games was a small amount and no one else had even heard of it. I have a hard time believing that Red Lyruim is a well known substance afterall a material that gives someone an incredible amount of magical power would be searched for by everyone.
Now there are probably hundreds of people with red lyrium and I'm left thinking.... How did they get that much red lyrium?
Don't forget, they said that that Demo they played was somewhere in mid-to-late game. This could have been brought up in earlier segments.

Didn't Nathaniel tell you in DAII that the First Warden was interested in the Primeval Thaig?
Holy crap, maybe the First Warden has something to do with this!!!!

So my bet is that excavations began in the Primevel Thaig not long after Hawke discovered what had lingered there.
Or at least there were more expeditions.

Good catch. Or she might have been referring to what she knew of Meredith's remains.Mr Cloud wrote...
Hmm, I'm just replaying DA2 and I've noticed that (before Deep Roads Expedition) Cassandra lashes out on Varric, claiming that Hawke knew of what was "down there" (red lyrium, of course), she made it seems like a big case.

Red Lyrium seems to be capable of self replicating. A small idol managed to turn all of Meredith's bodymass into red lyrium. Perhaps they "farm" it using people?

The game will end with us killing a giant, skeletal golem made out of red lyrium farmed from the Inquisitor's friends.MisanthropePrime wrote...

Snark aside, it's certainly twisted enough to be something Bioware would do.

Who's to say the Red Templars are anything but a very small splinter faction due to a small number of them being exposed to the lyrium?
The Devs said that the Red Templars are going to be an on going adversary. So there has to be a good amount of them or we'd kill of their entire group in the first encounter.
