I definitely hope we learn more about Red Lyrium; where in Andraste's Knickers it came from, why it makes people go psycho etc. the presence of red templars make me hopefull.

They smashed what was left of Meredith to bits and made pretty red swords out of her!

Red Lyrium seems to be capable of self replicating. A small idol managed to turn all of Meredith's bodymass into red lyrium. Perhaps they "farm" it using people?

The game will end with us killing a giant, skeletal golem made out of red lyrium farmed from the Inquisitor's friends. :wizard:

Snark aside, it's certainly twisted enough to be something Bioware would do.

I think that we've already seen golems made out of red lyrium, actually!

What if they were demons possessing the red lyrium like the rock wraiths?

I want the story of red lyrium to be the Dragon Age version of Breaking Bad or something.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Inquisition or main Templar Order started digging to try and find out what happened to Meredith and found a vein of the stuff.

I'll be surprised if it isn't at least touched on early in the game.

agreed - even more:

that could firstly open a new specialisation (people might be able to resist the madness - after all Varric didn't go crazy after using that one piece to upgrade Bianca, if you let him keep it)

secondly:

makes for interesting foes

and thirdly:

in the primeval taig there was not just a little of that stuff IMHO (yes, the condensed form - the idol - was rare, but the stuff itself, while still rare if compared to normal lyrium, does not seem to be that extremely rare)

greetings LAX

The presence of a helmet makes me think they're heavily mutated templars rather than only red lyrium.

Yeah that's my guess too. Taking enough red lyrium turns them into those things, I guess figuring out what Meredith couldn't. They'll probably be the equivalent of ogres in the Red Templar enemy factions, lieutenant or boss ranked enemies.

I doubt red lyrium alone could create such a monstrosity. I suspect demonic influence, or perhaps even an outright possession or merge with a demon.

After all, who benefits the most from the Templar order falling into madness and chaos (besides mages)? Who has traditionally been the most well-equipped and prepared force to deal with demonic threats?

I'm going to confirm that we will indeed find out more about Red Lyrium in the game and it's one of the loose ends that bioware specifically said they will try to clarify or resolve it fully in Inquisition.

Lyrium is supposedly the physical manifestation or whatever of the Fade in the world, so red lyrium is what? A corruption of the Fade manifesting in the world?

It could be related to the Black City. Perhaps whatever corruption permeates that place managed to become infused in lyrium veins, making it far more potent, dangerous, and addictive.

Maybe red lyrium is the result of blood magic being performed on it, capturing souls in it.

The lyrium 'spoke' to the ones who fell under its spell in DA2. Trapped souls looking for revenge?

The fact that is the idol was left behind while being so incredible valueble speaks for itself.

^I always wondered if that was related to "the song" darkspawn, broodmothers, and ghouls seem to be attuned to.

They didn't say it spoke, they said it sang. I have to assume it's tied to the Old Gods/Archdemons/Darkspawn/Cory/Architect, though I don't know how.

Could red lyrium be lyrium that's been affected by the darkspawn taint? Or perhaps related to the old gods themselves?

Even regular lyrium sings. Justice mentioned such in Awakening.

Edit:  at around 1:00 Justice says lyrium sings in this world, and he was meaning the normal kind.

maybe the red is just so much louder and chaotic that "mundanes" can hear it if too close.

Like I said we will get answers in the game and there isn't really any solid information on where red lyrium came from so not sure how far we can get with speculation with so little info.

Just imagine the horror of something like black lyrium would have on the world.

Dwarves can hear it and they are non magickal.

Meredith did too but the lyrium was worked on to make a sword out of it which might have changed it.

Now there are probably hundreds of people with red lyrium and I'm left thinking.... How did they get that much red lyrium?

Well, if we look back in DA2, Meredith turned into a red lyrium statue.  There might be some elements that is still unknown about the red lyrium.  Cause if we also look back in DA2 that one tiny idol turned into a giant sword.  Maybe the red lyrium can grow, or the red templars got "volunteers" for being statues?

Who's to say the Red Templars are anything but a very small splinter faction due to a small number of them being exposed to the lyrium?

The Devs said that the Red Templars are going to be an on going adversary. So there has to be a good amount of them or we'd kill of their entire group in the first encounter.

Doesn't mean they'll be a prominent force throughout the entire game. They could have a very minor role in DA:I.

It's possible with the Fade veil being ripped open it's corrupting all the blue lyrium in Thedas.

After Hawke found the idol, corrupted lyrium veins started showing up around Kirkwall. I assumed Hawke essentially opened pandora's box with that expedition. Hence more red lyrium.
