First things first: I'm only a few hours in to what is my first ever playthrough of this game and up to now it's been a steep learning curve! I've just bought a PC and am usually a console player so I wanted to begin my foray into PC gaming with what is widely considered to be the best RPG ever made.   :)

I suppose I'm just "checking in" with people who are obviously well acquainted with this game to keep me on the right track and give me any pointers if my current status is not as good as it could be. (I know RPGs are very personal adventures and there should be no "right" way to play but I wouldn't mind a few helpful hints if there are any.) I also just have a few questions that I'd really appreciate some clarification on!

Besides, this is also just a way to get involved in the Bioware forums too, since I'm a massive fan of their other games and hope to stick around here. :)

Current Stats:

Party:
Player Char - Female human warrior heavy armour sword and shield tank
Khalid - Sword and shield and heavy armour to tank with main char
Branwen - Quarter staff attacking up front with occasional healing spells
Jaheira - Slingshot from afar with healing spells and vines spell
Imoen - Archer from afar and equally increasing thief, pick locks and find traps but not pick pocket
Xan - Equipped with sword, but keeps distance and casts sleep/magic missile

We have just over 5000GP

I'm on Chapter 3 and currently most are level 3 (Imoen is level 4)

My one big challenge is the Sirines Dire Charm! There are two up at the Sword Coast in a beach area that use it on half of my party straight away, causing havoc and an inevitable reload. I gave up on them and plan to return at a higher level. I read about the Dispel Magic spell but haven't found it anywhere yet. I went to Thalantyr to buy it but he only has Resistance to magic. Is this the same thing?

Is Xan meant to always equip the Moonblade even though he is a mage? He is the only one who can use it but I only use him to cast sleep occasionally and am thinking about equipping him with a sling or similar. Also I have the Web spell in Xan's inventory but he can't write it to his spell book. Why is this? I love using AoE spells that freeze the enemy and Web sounds like it would be very useful. (Web is Level 2, Xan is Level 3!)

If you read all that then well done! If you answer then thanks a lot!

There's also Detect Invisibility.or Glitterdust. both level 2 spells, which you can load more of than level 3 Dispell Invis. or Dispell Magic. Kill them before they charm your NPCs, or cast lev 2 Stinking Cloud or lev 2 Web first, to keep them preoccupied
Unless you are fighting the weakest enemies - kobolds, etc. - a pure mage like Xan should spend his time spell slinging until he runs out of them.

He can't use 'Web' because he is specialist mage and web belongs to the class that is restricted to him. The dagger gives him some fire resistance and a sling would give a negative modifier in melee combat but a sling works ok when not in melee.

Mind attacks can be blocked by lots of things, 'Chaotic Commands' & "Greenstone Amulet" are best but a simple invisibility will stop them targeting you.

Enjoy the story m8.

In the vanilla (unmodded) game enemies use simple AI. For most that means they focus on the first party member they see - so you only have to protect one party member against dire charm and send them in to the sirenes first. A potion of clarity provides a good defense against them - there is one of those in the starting inn at Candlekeep - but there are quite a few other alternatives as well.

You will find the game much easier if you get into the habit of always sending your best protected character in to contact enemies first, while others join in with melee later or just hang back supporting with spells and missile weapons.

In the vanilla game I believe protection from evil stops them charming you. Been a long time though so apologies if I remember incorrectly.

Xan and his moonblade do seem a bit odd. I guess you could get him a few levels and buff, I've done that in the past and he is passable at it.

Thanks everyone.

Protection from evil did the trick thanks!

But now I'm getting pulverised by the Flesh Golems in the cave just after the Sirines! :(

I don't mind though. I know games like this make you go away and level up and return to hard parts. I'll just go back later.

The game is getting much clearer now and I'm just enjoying ignoring the main quest for now. I did the Nashkel Mines but now I'm just wandering the wilderness, gaining experience for the main quest again.

If you are finding the game a bit on the hard side, try getting a bit more experience before getting other party members. They join at approximately the same level as you are, so by not sharing the experience points at the beginning, your level will be a bit higher. They will never be above level 6 in vanilla though.
There is easy experience in Beregost which you can get without fighting.
