I don't have much knowledge about Dragon Age's lore so excuse me if I make some mistakes.

Anyway, I was replaying DA:O and in the beginning a codex page got my attention. It talked about how the Tevinter Empire scouted the Fade and tried to have some hold over it with little success. Latter they tried to storm the Golden City and, well, **** happened.

And that got me thinking, could they have done something different? Can someone actually control the Fade? And go beyond to the Black City and even the Maker himself?

Yes, they can control PARTS of the Fade. But conquering the whole Fade is something like conquering the world, rather daunting. The Baroness ruled a portion of the Fade.

Conquering the Black City is unlikely as it does not seem... healthy.

Conquering the Maker is even less likely as it's not certain he exists at all.

No, the Fade is too chaotic. It's constantly changing; the only portions that have any permanency are the domains of really powerful demons.

Aurelian Titus, the villain of the comics, tried to take control of the Fade and he failed pretty miserably.

Well, Somniari like Feynriel are capable of controlling the Fade and might be able to come close, but even they'd have to wake up at some point.

Since Feynriel can eventually end up in Tevinter to hone his abilities, it's implied that they have a lot of research on this form of magic and Somniari may have been used to in the attempt to take over the Black City

So possible? A tentative yes.

Capable of holding it from the demons? Very unlikely.

You can conquer the Fade just as well as you can conquer water. It's impossible.

We also know from the games that all the "stuff" in the fade was brought into being by the spirits and demons that exist there. We also learned that none of that stuff exists longer than the spirit that created it.
So if you were to "invade" an area in the fade and killed all the spirits and demons that inhabit that area, the 'landscape' and items there would simple vanish as well.
When you get done conquering an area, you would probably be left standing in the equivalent of wide open field at night surrounded by a dense fog.

To be able to conquer something... there has to be some permanent to acquire. That only happens in the physical world.

It is tactically, strategically, and logistically impossible to conquer the Fade.

You have better luck conquering the Mariana Trench.

Certainty of death, small chance of success. What are we waiting for?

But seriously, I doubt it. The Fade is too big and its denizens are too powerful. A portion? Sure. the whole thing? You'd have to have a cabal of mages or something that was huge.

We might not be able to conquer it but I'm pretty sure that we'll be able to push it back. We've had a long history of warfare from multiple Blights, Exalted Marches ect. We can survive and beat this problem too.

After looking at the title, I thought of the Qunari conquering the fade in order to control everyone's dreams. Then I get a weird mental image of the Arishok's face with the word OBEY in big red letters.

Because the Fade is the realm of dreams. Control of people's dreams usually allows control of people's thought.
Conquering a realm that is by definition chaotic sounds like a rather daunting task however.

The Fade is inherently ever changing. The Imperium couldn't even map it, much less conquer it.

Isn't the Fade infinitely vast?

Areas of the Fade are currently under the control of powerful demons. I assume it would be possible to wrest control of parts of it, yes.

As far as we know though, 'the Fade' is as large or larger than the world. As no one has managed to conquer all of earth yet, I'm going to suggests it's theoretically possible but highly unlikely.

Parts of it change.

Marten Stroud wrote...

We have no idea how large it is. The size might be under the control of whomever controls it.

I also thought it was always changing so it very similar to how water takes the shape of the container it is in or like how outer space is in general. Always expanding always and forever changing.

One of the multiplayer maps in DAI will probably be Firebase:Fade.

Well I don't know about conquering the Fade, but an option to run into any open Fade Tears I see (a la Elder Scrolls Oblivion) YES Please!

Would be an interesting feature (if implemented); you run in, battle demons, secure a 'beach head' and ensure that no more demons come through. Also, since the Fade is so large and (more or less) infinite, a 'horde mode'-like quest or area of the Fade would be well within the realm of possibility, and would not be as out of place as the DA 2 enemy waves were.

Invade? Sure. Establish a foot hold? sure, if you don't mind your soldiers becoming insane and die a slow death. Control? "conquer"? never.
The fade is too abstract.
you have to understand that the fade is very different from the material plane. In your incursions in previous games, your body never entered the fade, only your soul. attempts to enter physically into the fade in the past proved catastrophic.
Thats the big problem in DA:I. In small quantities, the fade allows mages to bend reality to their will, to ignore the basic rules that govern reality. With a large scale spill, you can expect reality itself to unravel, and things like the laws of physics to become irrelevant.

Only a dreamwalker like that elf in DA2 could possibly do something like that, and even then you would need more than just the one. Consider how rare they said that ability was it isn't really a valid option.

Only if you're a mage. You puny non-mages will have to just deal with it.

If you're fabulous enough, you can conquer anything.
