I was wondering lets say if I was a level 60 Soldier would I be able to import my character to Mass Effect 2 and change my class to sentinel?

speaking of importing,i transfered all my save files from the memory card to the hard disc,is it going to cause me troubles if i want to start a custom-made playthrough in ME 2? because i read somewhere(dont remember where exactly) that the files had to remain in their origing device; is it true,should i transfer my files back?

The dilamma: Importing characters only works if your ME1 data is in the place you used to create the character... but the importing only works if the data is in a hardrive. Hope im wrong, but if Im not
