I have been running around with EDI and Liara as team mates lately. I am obviously interested in their powers more than their weapons. But I am curious to know under which circumstances you might have them use an SMG and when you might switch them out to a pistol. (SMG = Tempest, Pistol = Suppressor, Sheppard has squad armor piercing ammo, Liara has warp ammo)
I know how the weapons work on Sheppard but squadies are obviously a different story.

I usually just commit to SMG, but that is because I have the Punisher. If you don't want to give them that, I would consider running Predator early.
Really it just depends on what you have available. Shuriken is pretty lackluster, Tempest might be ok if they have ammo powers, and Hornet is ok. Hurricane and Punisher are overall good.
On the pistol side, I would lean more towards the Carnifex family if I was going to commit there. Or you can try Scorpion for CC.
Either way it makes a little more sense to pick one so you can only by the Power Magnifier for one weapon type.

You just named a bunch of weapons I don't have. Punisher, Hurricane. Also, why not power mags on both weapons? Its not like I don't have the money. (or perhaps, its better to say I prioritize these mods over others.)
Main thing I am concerned about is letting them defend themselves against husks. They tend to get swarmed and I have to come to their rescue. With James I can just give him an omni blade and not worry about it so much. For an engineer Shep I would use an SMG for its ability to spray fire, but I am not sure the girls do that. (For a Sentinel I just detonate the armor.)
Also, not sure why you would pick the Carni over the Suppressor. They fire the Suppressor in rapid three round bursts, which is why I was wondering if that might be better than an SMG.

I don't equip power magnifier on both because I am not interested in switching squad weapons during a mission. It is largely a waste of time since they are there predominantly for their powers, especially with vanilla game weapons. The exception would be the high end snipers on Garrus and Ash.
Keeping husks off of them will have more to do with you intercepting them before they get in melee range of your squad.
Like I said above, you could consider Predator early and then switch to Tempest or Hornet when they are available. The alternative would be to buy the Paladin early and put that on them.
Either way the only weapons that seem to really do noticeable damage on the SMG/Pistol squad are Punisher, Hurricane, and Suppressor. So if you don't have them you can try Paladin, otherwise don't worry about it too much.

EDI isn't a girl, it's a machine.

@Necanor EDI is indeed a machine, but with female programming.

They do ridiculous damage with the eagle or the hurricane. Since the AI doesn't have issues with muzzle climb or lack of ammo, it's a decent choice.

You can't beat the Talon for in-their-face bang. It's a pocket shotgun that is more powerful than some of the full sized shotguns. Put a magnum barrel on it to raise the damage to "ridiculous," and put the mod of your choice in the other slot.

4th playthrough. Really haven't seen one reason to bring a woman with you into combat unless the game forces it. Bro power > girl power. The females do a good job, though, in filling their role as potential romance options.
