In the PAX demo vid floating around, at one point we see Viviene use a spell that creates an ice wall, blocking off enemies from moving. I think that's an excellent way to use magic, and one I was always hoping to see.

Will such spells be a prominent part of DAI combat? Should they?

Hopefully they are. I enjoy these elements of manipulating the environment in combat, whether it be using ice magic to make a wall or destroying a dilapidated bridge to bring archers down.

They should. Because that was amaze-o-balls.

Battlefield and environment manipulation in general was rather stressed as a focus of the commentaries, so I would say "all signs point to yes". However, it hasn't been confirmed either way.

Weren't you all gloom and doom in regards to the combat?

We had a thread about making magic "magical", and I think this is a great and novel way to do it gameplay-wise. It makes mages feel like they're actually altering reality instead of just using a different way to do DPS.

I'm excited about the possibilities for using spells and abilities to manipulate the environment even outside of battle situations - things like using spells to burn enemy ships to cut off their their retreat, like they showed in the video. I think having more ways to interact with and use the environment, and a variety of uses for the same ability, has a lot of potential to provide a more seamless and satisfying integration of story and gameplay.

I think we can all agree that that was pretty awesome.

I also read somewhere that to help Dagna, some of our agents used wind spells to get rid of some kind of gas. It technically isn't combat, but I would definitely some wind spells to add to my Inquisitor's repertoire.

Inb4 Mage is the most OP class, just like in DA:O.

When the first thirty minutes of the combat was hack and slash, yes. When the remaining ten actually showed how you could do strategic things, like us an ice wall to provide cover while instructing your party members to flank an enemy mage, then my mood changed. One is mindless button mashing, the other is amaze-o-balls.

Amaze-o-balls is a good thing, I think we can all agree.

I was going to play a rogue first but I am thinking of switching to mage. I am curious about this gameplay and reactions to a mage Inquisitor.

Vivienne may create walls of ice, but Cassandra beat down a fortress door by sheer force of badassery. Don't underestimate the woman-shaped battering ram.

Wouldn't be surprised if a Stone Fist spell could do the same thing.

I hope so. With Frostbite 3 allowing easy interactivity with the environment I don't see why not? I could only imagine firing a lightning bolt on water and frying enemies in the water. Friendly fire too of course if they brought it back.
