Proposal for non-stereotypical mages: being able to use a staff like a pole arm.

Being forced to use a staff as a mage sucks. It's unnecessarily limiting and even worse, forces players to conform to a stereotype.
Since it appears unlikely that this is changed, I propose the next best thing:
I want staves that not only look like spears, halberds or naginatas (DA2 had one of the latter), but that can also be used the same way.
Thoughts about this?
(To be clear: what I really want is the return of the Arcane Warrior. I've always tried to play against stereotypes, and that it appears I won't be able to do that in DAI bothers me greatly)

At least warriors have the choice between hammers, axes, swords and daggers, so no, you're not forced into a stereotype as a warrior, but I agree, there should be spear-wielding warriors as well.Darth Brotarian wrote...
Why can't warriors use spears? Why the stereotype that swords were the only melee weapon to exist?

Call me crazy... But I think that mages use the staff as a melee weapon when they are in close combat (DAII).
they do, I rather like it... makes it look like the know the enemy is close and they carry a big stick.

Also, stereotype is an extremely awkward word to describe something like this and I cringe every time I read it.

YEP. I like the idea of mages being able to use their staff as a close-combat weapon.
As long as I'm not back to standing there, pointing a stick at an enemy who is two inches away from me carving his initials onto my ribs while I scream for Alistair to get his arse into gear and help me I'm pretty happy.

They do, but the staffs feel and sound invariably like staffs, even if one has a bladed end. If a mage uses what amounts to a naginata in melee, it should feel and sound that way.El_Chala_Legalizado wrote...

And I still want my Arcane Warrior back. Even should they be nerfed. It's a matter of style.

And If I can hope. I want My mage to carry nothing but accessories that give bonus point like Ring or Blacelet. and use his Fist,Foot or some small weapon against enemy in melee combat.

and a naginata feels like?
I'd think I'd rather have battle mage back then arcane warrior. I like magic knights but I prefer them more warrior based.

A bladed weapon which cuts, as opposed to a blunt weapon.n7stormrunner wrote...

BTW, I don't mind the staffs giving extra boni. For me the choice of weapon is a matter of style, not effectiveness.

We even have the most iconic mage of all fiction using one: Gandalf and the sword Glamdring. Though the staff stereotype appears to be so ingrained people tend to forget that.SergeantSnookie wrote...
Sure. I've always wondered what the heck is stopping a mage from channeling magic through a more traditional weapon, perhaps even a sword. :S

and in a video game where you don't cut people in half.. or even cut an arm off. how does a bladed weapon feel like? I'm not trying to be rude I just don't get what your asking for, in da all weapons behave like blunt ones.

I can't remember how it was in DAII, but in DAO, the Warden chopped a lot of heads with his bladed weapons.n7stormrunner wrote...

Not much need for a weapon either way with that kind of power.
