Hoping we'll get a normal run/stance animation for a female PC this time

Lately Bioware seem to be making their ladies run in a manner that's strange.

The latest leading ladies of Bioware, Lady Hawke and Femshep had weird/over the top running animations. Lady Hawke looked like she had a broken hip when standing still. Honestly, it looked painful then her hips went all over the show when she was running about the place. Femshep had a weird jog that made it look like she was skipping while waiting for her wet nail polish to dry.

Needless to say, these bothered me quite a bit, more so that I couldn't just mod the horrid things out so I was stuck with skippy and hip-breaking.

I'm really hoping this is fixed in DAI. It was annoying that my fully plate armoured sword-and-shield Warrior strutted about like she was from the Blooming Rose or looking like she had a dislocated hip when standing still.

I know some people complained about the 'manly' run cycles in DAO, but Bioware flew right past the ballpark with their lady walk in DA2. Even a normal woman wouldn't be able to walk like that without falling over. Heck, ME3 was bad, that skippy-run nearly made me stop my Femshep playthrough.

I don't want my lady PC to run like a man. I don't want her to run like she's dislocated her hips. I don't want her to run like she's waiting for her nails to dry. I want her to run like a normal woman.

I guess I agree, though I may need to pay attention I see a woman walk/run. I had no idea there was a difference from a man walking or running.

It's funny how Bioware basically started to support female roles, yet games like Skyrim and Saints Row (3 and 4) all have better female animations than any Bioware game.

I never paid attention in Mass Effect, but I actually kinda really liked the female walking animation in DA2.
I thought it looked awesome. (And I don't particularly mind watching her swingin' hips when I play.)

Seems like a Goldilocks problem. After DAO people were complaining their female Wardens ran like a linebacker. Now you get just as many that she's too exaggerated.

But that's to be expected right? Kinda depends on your impressions of how your character ought to behave. That's something that can change from person to person, even playthrough to playthrough. To demonstrate what I mean... would it be weird if Isabela had an "exaggerated walk?" What about Aveline? What about protagonists like Isabela? Like Aveline?  What I mean is, you've got folks who justifiably revel in ignoring (or actively subverting) gender tropes... and you've also got folks who - paraprhasing here - enjoy looking like a Disney princess as they cut swaths through darkspawn or whatever the case may be.   Reconcile those two desires with one set of animations.  You'd need it to be juuuust right, like Goldilocks' porridge.

Coming up with something that appeals to everyone, in that respect, seems kinda hard. I'm typically hesitant to throw out the "mods can fix it" argument, but they demonstrably have for a lot of people - either making them more feminine (Skyrim) or less (DA2) - before. So... there's that.

I won't say it looked awesome but, I had no problem with it. Plus, it was hilarious  I wouldn't mind if they keep it or remove it. Although, the probability of it being removed is much higher.

When has Bioware ever done good walking/running animation?

Just for everyone who didn't seem to notice a difference between the male and female Hawke runing animations, here is a video of a male character with the female runing and idle animations to illustrate how absurdly ridiculous they are.

Well, it's not as if Bethesda provides them with any competition in that respect.

But they look pretty fantastic in DAI so far.  Especially on the side of the hill portion of the demo.

Regarding Lady Hawke's walking style, the only (human) female in DA2 who didn't walk like that was Aveline. And possibly Meredith. Everyone else, still talking about humans, had the exact same walk.

Like how it is with men, women also varies widely when it comes to how they walk. I'd think having all human females(or males for that matter) conform to one specific style of walking to be a lot more jarring than having that walk be exaggerated. One or two exceptions isn't enough to ignore that. I imagine that, like in DA2, at the very least, styles of walking will vary across races.

Gah, you beat me to it. ;)

But in all seriousness, SOME women DA run differently than men do (at least in my experience). There IS a distinct sway to SOME women's hips when they run or walk (again, in my own experience). I can agree about the idle animations though, that just looks like a fashion model stance, and not very natural. I hope the swinging hips are toned down a bit, but I also hope they aren't removed all together. I like the fact that males and females are given different (but equal) treatment when it comes to animations.

Fem Hawk looked crazy and unbelievable. I have faith they will fix that.

It's Bioware. They do not have a good track record with female characters lately.

I want my character to cartwheel everywhere. Or maybe a nice, gender-neutral backflip.

Really? I'd say they did them better than most gaming companies, personally.

As for the running, yes, that needs improvement, I'd prefer to have the DA:O animation back rather then the DA 2 animation which I felt looked plain stupid.

Like with how they used a skimpy outfit and juvenile ass shots with Miranda like something out of a Dead or Alive game?

I rank them pretty high up there in the creepy sexualization department.

They also put the dialog wheel on her butt. Just so you wouldn't miss it.

There is also the cameltoe on both Miranda and EDI. The fact almost every woman (including your mom) has boobs bigger than her head in DA2...

I think placing female Hawke's running animations (More like jogging, to be technically accurate)  on a dude's model is kind of unfair and unsupportive of the argument. Men and Women *do* walk and run differently. Of course a guy is going to look awkward running like a woman. I'll bet femhawke would look just as wierd with male hawke's animations. And that's disregarding technical issues like bone structure and whatnot not alligning between the two models.

Personally I liked female Hawke's animations. I thought they struck a nice balance between cool, sexy, and practical. But I completely understand why other people didn't like them. In fact I'm all for people looking forward to a change in this regard. I just hope that Bioware continues to do what is probably most practical and justifiable, and that is to strike a sound balance between many people's ideals.

And I hope people use more convincing arguments than "It looks stupid when a guy uses these animations, so a woman shouldn't." If I went out around the city and started immitating the way random women walked- even if I nailed it 100%- I'd look like an idiot too.

Hahahaha and you've got a Witcher 2 sig.  You're sitting in a glass house and I can see Triss's boobs through it.

In any case, this thread just applied for an expiration date.  Enjoy the impending trainwreck.

Why the hell must Femhawke be sexy? At all? Give her a different walking animation sure. But why do you need her to be sexy?

Why?

What are you people doing when she is walking?

Ironically, the Witcher 2 somehow managed to handle it better.

I've read many posts from women on this very forum requesting that their characters be more feminine.  It's just as valid a request as asking them to walk with less exaggerated movements.

Like I said before we got derailed by EDI's ****** or investigations into Miranda's butt, the issue as presented by the OP is a Goldilocks problem.

Their fans are certainly in agreement on that.

Or lord here we go. I can't wait for another essay on how The Witcher 2's full-frontal female nudity (while Geralt wears shorts) makes it super-mature while Bioware's low-cut tops are degrading to women and Isabela is an awful **** because she enjoys sex.
