I wouldn't mind seeing these guys return again, they were pretty interesting.

Same.

Also, in terms of creepiness, if not scariness, I would like to see the Children of the Mother in DA:I. One can only imagine how their 'evolution' would look in the Frostbite 3 engine.

Better yet, don't have darkspawn at all in this game.

The darkspawn were never scary.

The lead up to the broodmother was scary and creepy, but that appears to be a lightning strike event.

From what I remember, the description for Darkspawn were that they had withered, rotting flesh and constantly leaked a black ichor from their orifices. That's a lot different than what we got in DA:O. I'm surprised people say those were good designs when they were, essentially, orcs.

As for the Darkspawn look in DA2, I think the hurlock design was a step in the right direction, but it wasn't quite there. They needed to look more rotten and less Marilyn Manson fandom, I think. The Alphas and Genlock redesigns for Legacy were pretty sweet as well.Ultimately it's a difficult balance. You need to balance the horror of what these things look like with the tragedy of what they are. Mockeries of men. Deformed and misshapen, with no natural place in the ecosystem (proof of this is in their taint - that they corrupt all, even the very air they breathe). If the Darkspawn appear in DA3, I imagine it'll be an improved design and not just the DA2 models.

Bioware should take a look at Dark Souls for some inspiration at creating real and amazing monsters and characters. At least Dark Souls did it right, for as little background the characters you interact with had.

Characters were interesting but that's about it. Unless your talking about aesthetics.

DAO darkspawn please. The first time they got out of the korcari wilds showed that they were an army to be messed with. In DA2, they were just high.

What's gerneric?
You mean the human like creatures from the LotR movies.

The in games most used type of Orcs is the barbarian e.g. in TES, Warcraft, HoMM etc...

I'm hoping for something different than both DAO + DA2. Just more grotesque representations of their origin race. Eerie instead of cliche.

People bring up orcs alot here, when I found the DA2 bore more jarring similarities.

WHile darkspawn in DAO essentially looked like orcish burn victims, they moved and acted like they were somewhat human. As such they became more akin to the "mockery of man" flavor that Baron brought up, like the disease was mental as well as physical. These things were evil. Their vocalizations were interesting too, sounding like some sort of brutish language; as if they were trying to communicate with the player or amongst themselves.
The constant grin of the hurlocks, and the way they sometimes would laugh and mock their opponents was a nice touch too, giving the impression of liking the act of murder.

In DA2 they physically looked more diseased and human, yet they acted more like orcs, even animals sometimes. The way they scuttle around, hunched to the ground, hissing and snarling, seemingly without any thought in the matter, it's all very primal and instinctive. There's no technique in their fighting, and the weapons are raised over their heads like angry chimps with branches.
Also, the colourless design and blank facial expressions didn't give sense of any sort of intelligence or evil. Maybe that was the intent, but it didn't do my immersion any favors. I didn't feel like I was fighting something evil and dangerous, I was just carving through wave after wave of mindless, diseased beasts.

It would be weird for darkspawn to have hair. Make it bald!

I much preferred the DAO designs than the DA2 design for Darkspawn. Green is cool.

Just bring back the hurlock's grin from Origins and don't make them do that silly dance.

Origins looks would be better. DA2 looks I felt like i was killing the flying monkeys from wizard of oz that the wicked witch of the west has. Thats what DA2 Darkspawn remind me of. Legacy was a step up in the right direction for Darkspawn looks, I just wish getting that DLC resigned them for the main game too lol

Exactly. Uncanny valley is the way to go if they're aiming for creepiness.

The Darkspawn were never scary, they are unsettling and merciless creatures of war and destruction.

I support scarier dark spawn. They never really hit that note and it created an odd disparity between the NPC's "Ahhh! The darkspawn!!" and then actually seeing/dealing with them.

It's probably too much to ask for, but, oh if they could convey the same threat and fear as the infected in The Last of Us. I was nervous every time.

They did look pretty damn silly in DA2. The darkspawn are evil, unnatural creatures who spread a lethal taint to everyone and everything around them by simply being there, and their look should reflect that. They should be disgusting and diseased-looking, covered in pus, and blood, and god knows what else.

I thought this was a step in the right direction:

Do more of that, and less of this:

...err, sorry. Wrong picture. I mean this:

Yeah, don't do any more of that. That's not cool.
