They did look pretty damn silly in DA2. The darkspawn are evil, unnatural creatures who spread a lethal taint to everyone and everything around them by simply being there, and their look should reflect that. They should be disgusting and diseased-looking, covered in pus, and blood, and god knows what else.
I thought this was a step in the right direction:
Do more of that, and less of this:
...err, sorry. Wrong picture. I mean this:
Yeah, don't do any more of that. That's not cool.
LOL
Agreed by the way.

From Matt Rhodes:
This was an early pass that went too far. We didn’t want to go full horror show on it, but it acted as a starting point for the discussion.

They just looked like skeleton chimpanzees in DA2. They didn't look scary and they moved comically.

Agreed.
And I'd second a return to the DA:O-style darkspawn.

I would think the liquid more as a "stain" or simple discoloration. I would also darken the skin perhaps and make it more "grimy" in appearance. And the hair would look no faker than it did on The Mother.

Look at these:

That is just fantastic. They were wrong: they SHOULD have gone full horror show. I sincerely hope they will reconsider their stance with future darkspawn incarnations.

In DA2, they all (with the exception of ogres and emissaries) had the exact same running and fighting animations as the Moria orcs from the LotR movies. Like drunken crabs. It just looked silly.
I will say though that I did really enjoy the hurlock alpha remake in the Legacy DLC.

I liked the Awakenings looks. No, I loved them. Thought they were amazing. Legacy was better than vanilla DA2 but eh... Wasn't nuts about the genlocks.

I think we can all agree that we want the old DA:O Darkspawn. The new looks was silly and disappointing. Even if darkspawn aren't a big part of the story, their appearance should be fixed.
Except for the mothers, they never looked scary, creepy, interesting or even coherent: Their armor were too advanced for a race that lacks intelligence, specially in cases like the armored Ogres in Awakening, in the codex, the armor was described as something poorly constructed... Which you can barely notice.
At least the Darkspawn in DAII were more consistent in that regard.
As an user above me said, they should go full horror or at least continue with DA2 Legacy's direction.

They didn't want to go full horror show?! WHY?!?! Darkspawn are supposed to look horrible and horrifying, the more "horror show" you can get the better. Bioware was not thinking if they specifically didn't use that design before it was too scary... I mean, that's the whole bloody point!

Same.
Don't be afriad to make things too scary Bioware. Some of the most memorable monsters are the ones that make you cringe when you see them.
*Edit - And by cringe I mean in fear, not the way players cringed at the vanilla DA 2 Darkspawn.

But the Hurlocks don't change very much. I'm hoping they get something to work, because what they had in DA2 didn't. And above all; make them look dirty. EVERYTHING in DA2 was so polished and clean, you'd expect the docks and the gallows to be filthy but the Gallows looked like a PALACE, better than Hightown.

True their overwhelm ability did get a little annoying, but the first time I had one grow legs, run across the battlefield, and tackle my Warden made me freak out a little bit. Probably because I picture them as giant deadly cockroaches, and I woke up one night with one of those buggers crawling on my face didn't help any.

Darkspawn do use ghouls as smiths. Of course if you're driven mad by the taint your work isn't going to be that good, but there will be some semblance of intelligent design. And now that we have Awakened Darkspawn, they could probably make much more intelligent and advanced armor.

Having said that, while I preferred the original darkspawn(though the Legacy alphas were an improvement), I didn't mind the changes to the hurlocks or the ogres so much. More or less they were the same concept; ogres had minor cosmetic changes and hurlocks were still frontline fodder.
What did bother me was the changes to genlocks. It's not so much that I disliked the new design, there was nothing wrong with it in and of itself. But it's kind of hard to reconcile DAO genlocks with Legacy genlocks.

Yeah, the ones in DA:O were evil. Just evil. There was no question they were the bad guys. The ones in DA2 looked a touch more human, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the impact was lost and it could border on goofy at times.
But....but...STYLIZING! Like the barefoot uncanny valley elves! Or the exaggerated animations!

Man I miss that evil grin the Hurlocks had in Origins. And while I prefer the Ogres in the Origins the ones in DA2 actually looked pretty good. They should just use both Ogre models and maybe add a third one for variety. I just hope they get rid of the new Hurlocks. They look so f***ing stupid >greengoron89 wrote...
