I'm sorry, but I could never get past "here comes another wave". It just reminded me too much of the old atari game, space invaders.  If you are too young to remember space invaders, it was one of the first games available when Atari was a force to be reckoned with.

I'd say a mixture of the Legacy DLC Darkspawn design and the Awakening Addon Darkspawn design would be perfect.

Not quite generic orcs and definately not those silly putties, but something in between.

Yeh, also don't forget the "children" darkspawn from Awakenings were pretty cool too.

Didn't like the children myself, didn't really "dig" on the insect design of them.

Though the Hurlocks basically looked like zombies, the genlocks looked like Zombie Goblins, the ogres basically looked like Trolls and of course the cat-people/elf DS I wasn't much of a fan of.

From a lore perspective I suppose the DA2 Darkspawn actually are closer to the concept given of the Darkspawn than was actually shown in DAO and awakenings.

They are supposed to be pretty much mindless beasts with only the rare darkspawn being intelligent, though they did seem portrayed as more than that, maybe bizarrely enough it wasn't intentional?

And their armors were fairly advanced and well-done, of course just the knowledge and intelligence to even get close to effectively using armor would make them smarter than most animals right out the gate.

I could understand to some extent the need to make DS a bunch of mindless beasts, considering all their advantages.....its about the only legitimate way to make it so people can have a win on them.

I think its interesting that bioware is wanting us to feel sympathy for them instead of just pure fear, awakening with them having intelligence and that one robin-hood DSpawn. Working with him during the battle.

Them redesigning them to create a more empathetic appearance in DA2 and kind of failing horrible but that was the intent.

So odds on getting a darkspawn companion for inquisition?

Or just another aspect of how they don't like to do "pure" evil in this game series?

They were trying to make them look more recognisably human, corrupted, as well as simplifying armor to show brain degradation. Instead they made goofy bug-eyed skull-faces....?

The Legacy hurlock is fantastic by comparison.

Hmm, I don't think the darkspawn were ever scary to begin with, though Legacy took it to a great direction. Alphas, both hurlocks and genlocks, were the frightening monstrosities I was hoping to run into in Origins.

Darkspawn never looked scary, but they should look more corrupted and less cartoonish (DA2)

Original Darkspawn looked like something out of Hellraiser, "modern" Darkspawn look like Saturday morning cartoon villains. I have no idea why Bioware decided to change them, but I would give my right arm to see them restored to their former glory.

I miss these guys.

I wont be able to get a PS4 until next week, played DAI on the 360, so I havent yet played Descent or any of the other DLC. How much better do they look?

Also, avoiding spoilers on this blog, and on Tumblr, has been hell.

I actually like the darkspawn redesigns, for every type except the Hurlocks.

The old hurlock alphas were generic dudes in way-too-fancy armour. The new hurlock alphas are Hellraiser-esque monstrosities.

The new shrieks are better too. They actually look like the darkspawn version of elves.

Yea, my issue with them is their armor but the Alpha Hurlocks look awesome. I'm still not that fond of the gorilla Genlocks tho

Man, I miss the old Hurlock Emissary. They used to look so badass. Now the just look like lanky dimwits.

I really hate the Shriek redesign, the bestial original was, in my opinion, far superior.

I feel like it's not so much the scary look of darkspawn is wanted but rather more of the gruesome, appalling acts the darkspawn use to commit and represent is what people want back like the throatcutting and heads on pikes, flesh eating morbidly obese broodmothers, etc. *shudder*
