This is merely an suggestion, but taking an example from ME3, how about romance with characters that are not active companions? Such as new allies that join your cause and stay at your keeps. I know it wouldn't have the dinamic of having unique dialogue during travels and banters, but it would surely allow more freedom of the relationships the players want to have.

If we have a main keep, similar to the Normandy, that might work.

I agree with this. I also don't see why they don't do smaller romances like some of the ones we saw in mass effect (and origins sort of)

For example I played a female dwarf noble playthrough in origins and if you are female you can have a romance of sorts with Gorim your first.

I couldn't see that character with any of the romancable companions so I didn't romance any of them. I wish Bioware had just left that story rather than having him married to someone else coz I coulda role played that she was only ever interested in him.

The Samara romance in Mass Effect (although she is a companion) Is oddly satisfying as well even though that never really goes anywhere.

Like how you could marry Anora? I'd be into that.

I support non-companion romances. The only downside is they tend to get less development.. but sometimes you just don't like any of the main romances and having an alternate option is a plus.

I loved the Samara romance! They added on to it nicely with Citadel.

I rather enjoyed romancing Anora in DAO and DAA; rather enjoyed seeing the lass lower shields a bit towards the end. Seconded.

They'll probably put in a ****house or Afterlife-esq strip club if those count as romances

Yeah, only with some actual romance involved. The Anora option was cool cause it let you play the nobility politics game, but a non-companion romance with actual romance would be a great option.

Yea, I would like that to, but from my understanding there will be multiple keeps so unless it is able to make so that NPC is able to travel to multiple keeps or some other method to make it work, I'll be happy. If not, I won't care that much.

Anora's is subtle! She becomes nicer, and actually shows some concern at the beginning and end of Awakening for a protagonist she's married to.

I think it would be boring to have romance beyond companions. I rather have them put more focus and polishing current ones. You know.. all these cost 'zots'

So do I. What is it that impedes NPCs from doing so? Is it the lack of floating weapons in their back perhaps?

Yes, your Warden might eventually enter a loving relationship, but the whole reason for the engagement is political, not emotional. It's less of a romance and more of political intrigue which later becomes love.

If there's going to be an out of companion romance, I don't want to get an epilogue that says "And then they were in love". I want to see that progression happen in game.

I often feel that it's simply too underdeveloped for my tastes. The only non-companion 'romance' I really liked was Anora.

My heart did a little sommersault when she was actually worried for my Warden. (His heart squealed like a schoolgirl, I'll have you know.)
I didn't mind that the romance isn't really a romance at all and is based on headcanon more than anything else. I loved it.

I'd like more of that, yes please.

I liked Bella in DAO.
I felt my warden should have been able to romance Bella in DAO . .
Smaller romances where the hero romances an npc and the npc stays home at the castle, possibly even has children with the hero, while it may seem to complicate things, I think it could cut back on the dynamics of romances as well as questions about the explicitness .

For such a huge game, I don't think it would work out so well. With ME3 you had a main hub that had all possible love interests together so you could progress the romance easily. And that still made the npc characters that weren't squad members get a smaller romance arc than the other characters. With DA:I I don't think it would work the same. Plus it's more interesting to have the love interest in your party and have various LI specific lines during missions, isn't it?

As long as I'm able to seduce Empress Celene at some grand and extravagant Orlesian masquerade ball then I'm content.

Day without a romance thread is a day lost.

And as for the NPCs romances - ME3 allowed this because you spent a great deal of time on the Normandy, thus your love interest was in one place. This will not be the case for DA:I, where you'll be capturing keeps, moving all around Thedas (having in mind that devs aren't that eager to implement fast travel feature as they now have mounts). Keeping the romances "exclusive" to the companions seems like the right choice.
