I apologize if I am late to the party on this one.  I searched for "melee combat" but came up empty.

One would think that if there is such a thing as ammo now that we would have to resort to our fists/improvised weapons more often... and if so hopefully it will slightly improved over that in the original game. ( pistol whip / elbow smash ).

Define improved, I don't think you will be doing kung fu or have knife fights. It's just a rifle check or some unknown three hit combo... but other then that it's all guns all the time.

Haven't really seen an improvement in the melee combat

Was wishing you could roundhouse kick someone

I wish biotic users got a biotic kick or punch. It'd be awsome to level a krogan twice your sized like that. I wonder how Thane's hand to hand will work in gameplay. If he doesn't do anything hand to hand then it would be kinda lame.

Well I've noticed that most of the enemies actually go down when you hit them, unlike in ME1 where melee was absolutely useless.

Though I recall trying to use it on krogans fairly often, perhaps that's why.

I don't think Shepard could knock down any Krogan, unless he was using dual Combat Exoskeleton, but who uses those?  But all other targets would normally get knocked down if knocked about by Shepard.

But as for melee, it is no longer automatically, meaning you won't try to automatically melee any enemy that comes into melee range, and it is now user controlled.

They were gonna add a more powerful attack called haymaker, but they didn't implement it in final game on account of uselessness.

I do like that it is player controlled for melee, I had not heard this. Any link where this info is from? For melee attacks at least.

Must be why; and it's good news to hear about that auto melee thing. God that was annoying in a tight spot in ME1.

ExoGeni data anyone? I swear... a tiny corridor full of krogan = most frustrating battle in ME1. Especially when you're godlike invincible with immunity, and you end up stuck half way inside a wall with an enemy krogan butt rushing you while your two teammates just stand around and watch.

No to the OP. You press B to melee.
