Kaidan's romance was at least believable over the course of the series.
As far as bi/lesbian relationships go, I think the massive problem is Liara, since she's practically forced on us as the love interest regardless of anything else. Since Liara is female, it creates the implication

I thought Garrus's romance was utterly stupid. It literally came out of nowhere. He was a great friend, unbelievably so. But romance...that was nothing more than lame fanservice.
The Tali and Garrus romances are probably some of the worst set of pandering in the ME series.
Still makes me laugh that the Drell were made because they wanted to make Thane an alien that women would find attractive. They really hit it out of the park with that one.
Bioware is really stupid when it comes to the female fanbase. No surprise there.

Let's count:I'd argue the majority of femshep's romances aren't for women.
Liara - fair enough.
Jacob, Kaidan, Thane, Garrus... Seriously? I'm sorry, but unless you can come up with some actual statistics that show that most players romancing Jacob are male I'm going to call bovine excrement on that.
And even if you include the non-romance romances (Kelly, Allers, Traynor, Samara, Javik, Vega) you'd get up to half, but by no means the "majority" you claim.

Kaidan is the exception.
Thane was meant to appeal to the female fandom. But as can be seen, he didn't go over that well and was written out because of it.
Garrus isn't human, is only available in ME2, .Even then, players don't want just the option of "human guy" and "ugly alien", especially when the other section of the fandom gets a variety of options.
Though romances are kinda dumb anyway.

He had a good enough fanbase, I don't think they dropped him due to "bad appeal". In ME2, he always talked about his borrowed time, t'would be unrealistic to assume he would get a magic cure and a happily ever after ending in ME3, even if it turns out that's not specifically how he died.

This was something they did well with the Cortez romance path; if you wanted, you could tell him you were gay, but still just wanted to be friends. Granted, it's probably because people would have thrown a fit otherwise, but the principle is much the same.

What makes either Garrus' or Tali's romance immoral or distasteful? And what exactly makes them any different from the other romances?

Well, I have FemShep romance Garrus, because the other FemShep romances are all even worse than his. I admit, Garrus is ugly as hell, but he's still better than Liara, Jacob or Traynor. I did go for Kaidan once.
Tali is basically a human girl with a few differences in the extremities and glowy eyes.

I'd put Traynor on the real romance list, myself. Doesn't change your point, of course.

That's why I mentioned her extremeties being different. She has two fingers/toes less and her knee bends at the shin.RZIBARA wrote...
