What if like Wynne, they were (nearly) killed during the Tear and the spirit was merely keeping them alive?

A tag along spirit, probably making ominous appearances prior to the reveal?  I could see it.

Not really, by the end of the book there's a cliffhanger and unanswered questions, we're not really sure about what he is (it's left something of a mystery).

...no it isn't. It's spelled out plainly by the end of the book. Cole even says what he is himself at the very end.

No he doesn't? Lambert greets him as "demon" but Cole just says "I went to him, and held his hand in the darkness until it was over". Cole never says "I am a spirit" or "I am a demon". The "I" there is clearly implied to be some kind of Fade entity that was confused when it joined with Cole-the-human, but it could be a demon or a spirit - it isn't made clear.

From earlier in the book, I seem to recall it being mentioned that a Cole was originally a Fade entity so tiny and weak you could hardly call him a spirit or demon at all.  He was a wisp.

Now that I think about it, its possible that being a spirit or, as mentioned earlier on this page, having a spirit attached, gives the Inquisitor the ability to close veil tears (Maybe only under the right circumstances).

This would actually fit in the lore, remember the demon that possessed Sophia Dryden? And it might be the reason the Inquisitor was chosen for his/her job.

Pardon me that should have read "a demon or a spirit or something else" :>

In that regard, Cole seems to have been similar to the entity that possessed the Grand Oak, a demon or spirit that slipped through, didn't go insane in their new host and forgot who they originally were.

A tag-along spirit would be interesting, since Wynne only knew what had happened because she'd long since seen or been aware of the Spirit of Faith.

If it was sudden and traumatic, I could imagine a spirit in the Inquisitor being completely unaware where they were and what happened?

And at the end of the game you realize that no one was actually interacting with you the entire time except for a small boy who had a gift of seeing ghosts?

Credits role, protagonist with pure red eyes is shown after credits looking over a burning city where are innocents are being slaughtered by possessed inquisitors.

I like this idea, it sounds plausible. Cole would act as an introduction to the idea, even.

DA's most overpowered assassin. At least in the book he/it appeared.

What scares me a little is that it does sound plausible but also something requiring great care in doing correctly.

Yup.. When Lord Commander Lambert uses the Litany of Adralla to dispell Cole's invisibility, we come to know the nature of Cole, in the end, the Litany it's made to fight one thing and one thing only.... In the epilogue he explains the rest.

Not exactly as Cole only killed Lord Commander Lambert.... The other killings were made by Rhys under the influence of Cole's Blood Magic.

Every person in Thedas is possessed. That's what special abilities are: spirits acting through the mindless bodies of Thedosians.

Did these spirits come from aliens transported to Thedas in DC-8s?

Been there, done that with Anders and Wynne - I really don't want to see them go there, leaving the protagonist potentially dealing with some sort of internal struggle for control vis-a-vis the Anders-Vengeance relationship (if you want to call it that). I like Anders and Wynne, but it seems a bit overused to me at this point.

What if. . . the inquisitor is a fade spirit like Cole but Flemeth told her/him/it that its/her/his goal is to close the tear from the fade when he/she/it were still disoriented from the tearing. To put some morality into the fade spirit, Flemeth gave her/him/it someone's memory, and the spirit accepted that memory and accepted this fate.

So in a way, Flemeth saved a spririt from going berserk but became her puppet.
