The human brain has an ENTIRE section dedicated to fear and revulsion of critters like spiders

You are lucky, in a fantasy setting, that you are not forced to fight a fully developed Azlu (go on I dare you to look it up)

I can relate. I have to turn off my monitor during the Lazarus intro of ME2 because I have a phobia of inside-body things. I can't imagine Bioware would be able to cater to every phobia.

Can this Dragon Age game not have ridiculously huge spiders.  I get that they are for shock factor, but I've had to mod them out of the previous two games so that my fiancée can play them.  Considering that I won't be using a pc for the next installment and won't have an option to use a mod on whichever next gen system I choose, can the spiders be removed, toned down, or limited in how much they populate areas in the game?  If nothing can be done about it I understand, but i just wanted to bring up that this might be a potential barrier for some people.
That's really my only concern.

The Frostbite engine is very difficult to mod.  I've read that some people have managed to swap textures or recolor something in it, which is at least in the realm of swapping the spider model with something else, but still very unlikely.

How bad is it for her?  Could she handle perhaps bringing the console down and killing them instantly with a command whenever they pop up (e.g., no actual lengthy combat with spiders)?  Or is just the sight of them too much?

Another one of these threads? Come on guys....shall we remove open spaces for the agoraphobics next? Or any and all reptiles for the herpetophobics?

There is obviously a difference in scope and practicility between removing spiders and removing open spaces from a game.  I'm also not sure that someone suffering from agoraphobia would be affected by "virtual open spaces" as much as someone with arachnophobia would be by "virtual spiders."

There are also many more people with arachnophobia than there are with herpetophobia.  According to Wikipedia, it's estimated that 50% of women and 10% of men show symptoms of arachnophobia.  While I doubt those numbers accurately portray the number of cases bad enough that a video game cannot be played because it has spiders, it is still an extremely popular phobia.

But no, let's all be glib about crippling mental disorders.  Haha!

You, my friend, are asking excellent questions.  She tends to see the spider, twitch at the sight of the spider, breath deeply and yell for help while pressing all of the buttons on my laptop praying that it does something.  Don't know if that gives aid in decribing where she's at with spiders, but I don't think the kill all button will help her in the middle of the night when she's dreaming of the giant wolf spiders summoning minions that hiss and shoot webs... I'm getting carried away.

As I said earlier, I will probably getting the game on a next-gen console first.  I'll wait until I get a new desktop before I consider buying it for PC and all of its wonderfulness.  So for the moment, I have no idea how to work around this, except to be in the room at all times, in case of an emergency.

That is actually a great idea for the developers to use with the Oculus in my opinion.

That is a huge spider!  I thought that was the azlu for a moment.  But yeah, Azlu, definitely have a very horrific tone to them.  I feel more knowledgeably  on the topic of spiders now.

One thing I liked about spiders in DA:O was their use of webs to ensnare. That's the sort of tactical problem that I wish was present in more enemy NPCs. I want my enemy NPCs to feel different from each other, not just some generic melee/ranged opponent. Force me to look at different battles...differently.

and with a storyteller like me they end up even more unsettling than they are in pictures....but then again Azlu are from a personal horror RPG

I am not making fun of them but it remains that spiders are, in the collective imaginary, something scary, giant spiders are a staple of RPGs for exactly that reason and one cannot just remove them because some people are so acutely arachnophobic that they cannot handle them in a game. Bioware was asked this many times in the past.

That's not a spider; it's a solifugae. They don't spin webs and their bite isn't venomous. They are closely related to scorpions.

Ya, what is it with fantasy games they all have trillions of spiders!!!

Come on guys, spring some money for some more motion capture or something. spiders are getting pretty lame.

I would suggest those little lizards out of deep road, jumping on you like piranhas.. or like in jurassic park

I didn't think they were scary enough.
I've seen a real female black widow relatively close.
The big red hour glass and the rest of her body so black it's hard to compare her to anything else.
I killed her of course.
They need to make them more fearsome.
shrugs.

Us arachnophobes have been tortured too long. Put some giant snakes in and make some other people squirm I say.

well, spiders do make me nervous in RL (not that i run away from them - i tend to bash them with an available tool of choice...i am more afraid of wasps, bees and the like (got stung as a child - have been afraid ever since)) but running away from things on a screen (sorry, but it might scare me and get my adrenaline pumping, but i will never run because of it, even more if i have either a weapon (from swords to fire arms (in other games)) or magic available (in fact i enjoy killing those types of animals i hate in RL))

greetings LAX
ps: you can take that as a no - i like me killing some spiders :)
pps: @OP: why go from a PC to a console? - i mean you can do much more with it (and i for one will always have one anyway, so why not buy a more powerfull one to play on, not just one for web-surfing and office-/multi-media stuff?) and games are cheaper, too (in germany console games cost 60 euro or more and games for pc average on 45-50 (note: special editions cost more of course) so that's more then 10 euros i save and i buy quite a lot of games)

I don't hate spiders per say. I don't want them crawling on me or anything, but they're welcome to stay in their corner and hang out. But not in my bedroom. They can have the living room, my husband and I hang out in the back room :P

Even the big spiders don't bug me. I actually hate the way they die. UGH. When they flop over, and twitch. And their legs all curled up... :( freaking me out just thinking about it.

Ugh, please don't. Spider season has set in here, bloody great monstrosities are invading from the garden and yesterday one of them abseiled from the ceiling right onto my cat (who was sitting on me at the time of course).

Couldn't we have giant woodlouse or something for variety this time.

People have phobias about every kind of animal and a wide variety of other things, as well. I admit that arachnophobia is one of the more common ones, and also that giant spiders are at times a little over-used, but I don't think it's reasonable to ask for nothing that might bother someone with a phobia to appear -- and despite that it is one of the more common ones, not fair if only spiders were removed for that reason. Toned down I could see. They do get a bit dull if there are too many of them anyhow.

Still, I can relate to those who have a fear of spiders and play computer games. I am rather cynophobic -- not as bad as the reactions some people have, but to the extent that seeing and hearing dogs in games makes me distinctly uneasy -- and the Mabari in particular creep me out like anything (for some reason, even worse in DA II than they did in Origins -- something about the eyes and mouth, I think). Dogs or wolves are quite common in games in general, too. I wouldn't want them removed, both because I don't personally consider it to be a reasonable request to make, and because I have the perhaps vain hope that dealing with enough of seeing dogs in computer games will somehow help me not freeze up or bolt every time I see one in reality.

what if there's a monstrous spider mount and it quickly ends the game with the demons saying "ah, hell to the no, BYE" because even they can't trust something with that many legs?
