Why are you lot so afraid of spiders? We look like freaking Gojira to them and not only are they afraid of us, they catch and eat all those annoying flies and mosquitoes.

OHHHH COME ON! SPIDERS ARE AWESOME! and when you have shapeshift or summon spider we can control then and they make like those cute noises of their paws walking on the floor! well... at least i think its a cute noise... like: tec tec tec tec tec
Spiders are our friends.
They protect us from the insidious (buzzing) flying vermin.

I don't have a problem with fighting spiders pe se, but I do hate the way they suddenly appear with that sound. Every damned spider attack comes with an increased chance of a heart attack. I'm not playing a horror game, so go away with those cheap shock moments.
you going to say the same about Mass Effect?
I don't recall a similar enemy type in the ME series? Husks were creepy, but they didn't have a habit of jumping down from the ceiling.
They did in ME2, ME3 had many attempts at cheap scare moments especially with banshees
The ORIGINAL adjundants (back then pariahs) were meant to be horror-like enemies too
Well, I never jumped in my chair or gasped because ME enemies managed to scare me. Only happened with the spiders, primarily DA2's. Banshees' screams never startled me either, just warned me they were coming. I don't know if that's something on my end then, or that there's still a difference in the way the games handle these things. I think it might be what happy_daiz said, about how the spider's sound is so loud compared to everything else. Banshee screams were not that loud.

In the DA universe - or in other rpgs as well - I haven't the reason behind why giant spiders behave this way. Unless it is the standard explanation from long ago i.e. A wizard did it...
Rats have also been overdone in rpgs; at least PS: Torment turned this around and made rats clever, intelligent animals. And Oblivion had a clever , intelligent quest which had a different take on them as well. (rats I mean).
As for spiders in the Dragon Age origins games, I think they are in there for two reasons:
1) to scare people - a lot.
2) every house in every time period has had spiders; the houses and castles in Dragon Age games shouldn't be any different...

OK, so why don't people like the giant spider? I really don't get the hate. Is it arachnophobia or something along those lines? /:
For most people, I think it's arachnophobia. Others might not like how they ambush the party.
I think that for some people things will be worse with the new engine, since spider might be more realistic, both in appearance and movement.
Not to mention that we migh even get a new type of spider, other than the common one and the varterral.

not the point, just because the spiders scared you more effectively that does not mean the intention was different in Mass Effectrenjility wrote...

can you point out something in DA that someone would not call a huge cliche?

There are spiders in ther Desolation Of Smaug movie.Jackson says spiders are scary.lol.There are production videos onn youtube you can watch.
The black widow I killed, black with a red hourglass on her abdomen, was the scariest spider I've seen, because a bite can kill you.
I doubt we see that kind of thing in DAI, but who knows.

This is one thing Mass Effect did better. They had no spiders. Sure there's rachni, but I don't view them as spiders.
