As much as I like DA2 it always bugged me when I was fighting two different types of enemies, like spiders and dwarven carta, and they both attack my party while ignoring each other.

They made it work in DA:O with the spiders v darkspawn, and the wolves v darkspawn, etc.

I just want to avoid the ridiculousness of fighting both mages and Templars (or any other opposing groups) in the same area, but somehow they both decide to tag team me.

Yeah, rival factions should be rivals. End of. Only if we aren't the common enemy xD

Enemies DID attack each other in DA2. During the battle with the qunari, a group of Carta dwarves fight the qunari. In Act 3, if you sided with the mages, the templars would fight Hawke AND a group of nearby demons. In Legacy, deepstalkers and giant spiders duked it out. In MotA, a pack of ghasts banded up on an alpha wyvern.

Those are just the few examples I came up with off the top of my head.

I think it could add to the strategy like provoke a low level enemies to use as bait for the higher level enemies to create an opportunity for the inquisitor to strike. No one would see it coming.
