Phoenix Vanguard

just unlocked but since I promoted recently I've had to run silvers to get a handle on him/level vanguard up.. so I waited until I could max BC and added a bit of the other two powers (lvl 8 or so) before trying him out
I understand this Vanguard can create his own BE's? typically I played the Slayer exclusively and sometimes the Krogan for lulz..
he seems a bit underwhelming.. cool whips withstanding

Cancel Smash with HM just after the whips pass over his head.
Edit: Skip Lash too. It's a waste.

Personally I like the melee build that skips lash. Lash works better on the adept and even so is a very trollish power wrt teammates, pulling abominations or melee primed phantoms into the center of a group. People who use lash like this are called Lasholes. ;p
Smash goes through walls without losing damage. This is helpful due to the long animation. You can spec it to either destroy armor on a single target (6a) or hit three(?) targets for pretty high damage (6b). I choose the latter for the melee build. FYI, swarmers count toward the target limit so beware of smartass Ravagers.
Learn to cancel Smash right after the damage wave triggers by either rolling or doing a heavy melee attack. The Smash/Melee combo can easily do 8k damage with the right spec.
For Charge, always always choose Radius. You need it to charge more than one enemy. I love bonus power on the Phoguard, since it give me the option of immediately Smashing. In my experience, there's not much more benefit to getting back 100% vs 50% of his small amount of barriers.

In order to make the Ex-Cerbs work, I've taken to putting a Geth Scanner on him and noobily Smashing enemies through walls. For Vanguard, I skipped Charge altogether because it just got me killed. Since Ex-Cerb Adept at least has Singularity, I play him the same way but with a lighter weapon (Acolyte) so my cooldown stays low. Ex-Cerb 'guard carries slightly heavier weaponry since I'm not going for combos.
It's less than ideal, but then the Ex-Cerbs are less-than-ideal kits that I don't play very much anyway.

I really, really hate the Ex-Cerbs. I always found Ex-Cerb Vanguard especially frustrating because of how useless he is after a Charge. "Mmmmmrrrraaaagh!!!" ::prepares Smash or melee but then gets stunlocked in mid-whip:: You basically have to be strong at weapons close range to make him work, which I'm not.

They're really, really good kits but take some time to learn to play. I use to hate them but one of my favorites now. I would put in some more time. Learn to roll cancel smash and it helps a lot.GordianKnot42 wrote...

This is how I spec him. He's pretty good at getting defenses down since his whip melee gets a damage bonus to shields/barriers and armor.

@Krauser: I've tried that build, and the problem that I kept coming up with was that anything with barriers or armor wasn't anything you wanted to get close enough to in order to Smash. (Brutes instakill, Phantoms instakill, Banshees instakill, Dragoons always get their Smash off first and then Smash again with their 0.000001s cooldown rate, Pyros melt you down before you can finish.) How do you handle those enemies with this build?
If I see them coming from around a corner I ready the smash then when I know they're hit with it, I roll cancel out of the rest of the animation to get some distance if they survived. I tend to hug the corners a lot with him and it has saved my bacon more than I care to count. Also, if there's a lone enemy away from the group, I'll charge that guy and take care of them from a distance, that's what the suppressor is for. Also if you have a brute about to charge you, juke roll him then smash him as he's recovering. For the 'Goons, if you see them not using their whips yet, stun them with the charge then shoot them in the head with the shotgun. Or do the charge>melee on them since the whips get a bonus in damage to armor, barriers/shields. As long as you charge before the whips come out, you should be fine. Pyros, if you can confuse their targeting with their flames by constant dodging and charging you'll be ok. Do a constant corner hug when facing them. It doesn't take much force to stagger them one charge and a shotgun shot to the head should do it.
If anything, try swapping around rank 6 on BC and try radius on rank 4. I know with max power damage in the passive tree you still will have enough force to stagger phantoms.

Playing melee against hitscan aimbot enemies at 60 FPS in London with a 625 shield character. Sure, go ahead and try. It's really fun.MGW7 wrote...

Wasn't the whole point of that to show the Phoenix excelled in big maps? Now you're trying to say the opposite as a cop-out?Crimson Vanguard wrote...

I was being sarcastic and joking. Phoenix Vanguard sucks ass in big map. And it wasn't fun losing all your shield right after a charge because a Nemesis just want to watch herself burn.Tokenusername wrote...

Make a sarcastic statement, someone acknowledging it as a joke, then responding by showing evidence that supports the statement as being earnest sort of sends mixed signals.Crimson Vanguard wrote...
