So I guess everyone'll just play as a Qunari as soon as the game's released...

Human first. Don't need horns or pointy ears to be a hero.

Maybe, but it makes for a better story if the hero is something other than the generic human trope.

Right.  Because being 3 feet tall, having pointy ears or being 8 feet tall makes a story better.

I wonder what would happen if Bioware made the default a elf or qunari because that will probaly skew the results.

We talk about this all the time. We have raw numbers, but that's all they are, just numbers. There is no meaning or intent in data. So we hem and haw about statistical double rainbows and how to deal with the problem, if it even is a problem. Thing is, roleplaying means different things to different players, and for many, it is the ability to play and create avatars of themselves, human males or females. Sure, some might also shrug and go with the default, but that's just as valid as someone who spends an hour fiddling with the nose on their dwarf.

It's tempting to think that of course they'd love playing (insert other race here) if they only knew it was there, because you love it, and I of course want them to see it because we pour our hearts into making it. But some players just plain like different things, and there's intangible value in choices they choose not to take. That, after all, is what makes it a choice.

Personally, and I'm pretty sure most people on BSN agree with me here, I think the people who completely skip the CC without even thinking about picking a certain race/class are much more strange than the ones who sit with it for hours trying to make the perfect character. And I'm far from one of those people aswell.

I'm just saying the hero does'nt always have to be the generic human.

There are some CC elitists on here. I for, one, will admit to using the default Hawke in DA2. I fiddled around with my Warden in DAO, but default Hawke looked right to me, so I used him (though I would have liked the option to give him a shave). I also used default Sheperd. That did not stop me from properly role-playing them.

There are two considerations here: 1. I have to look at the character and live with it for the hours that this game takes. I stopped many a DAO run because I couldn't stand looking at my character anymore. Default characters, in general, look good -- why wouldn't you use them?
2. I do not want to waste the time to create the perfect looking character. Does this make me lazy? Or are the people who are spending hours fiddling with the CC, really just people who have more time to do those things (Horrors of horrors, I also don't adjust my television or DVD player to the best settings for every different movie or TV show -- this must make me inferior)

Sorry this was a bit off-topic was the default is not something to be derided. I also think the human should always be the default because it is the most accessible and requires the least amount knowledge of lore and is the "easiest" to role-play. Now, I would not object if the default was a human female -- mind you.

The quanari are a nice option to have. But those of us who are using the default human are not "playing the game wrong" or are not "hopeless noobs"

They're going to be much more popular than elves or dwarves and probably be picked as often as those two races were combined in DA:O. And BioWare will scratch its head and wonder why the qunari are so popular, but the reason is simple: they are taller and more muscular than humans.

Only 5% of DA:O players picked a dwarven origin.

But Dwarves are the best!

@Cjones91: Nobody is saying that the hero should always be human. That doesn't mean that playing as a human is objectively boring or generic, or that only 'newbies' would play them.

Nope, I alway do Human Warrior then Human Mage. I might do a female Quari Rouge last then or elf depending on if they keep the Bow and Arrow more towards DA2 style

It makes the romances more cheesetastic than they already are, which enhanced my enjoyment of them in DA:O.

I'm still torn between a female elf or Qunari. Going to wait and see what their background is, I guess.

That's the thing, why should the default always be human? Why can't they be elf, dwarf,or qunari? And most people who play as the default human do so because they expect it and it is considered to be the norm.

You seem to be saying that if we had a different default, these people would just change it back to human.

I edited to include an explanation when you were replying. So to reiterate:

Humans should be the default because 1.  They are the most accessible.  Everyone playing this game (with the exception of some intelligent dogs) will be human.

2.  They are the easiest race to allow players to "enter the world".  Being a human requires very little knowledge of the lore and the world or Thedas.  Whereas playing as Dalish or City Elf  or Dwarf Commoner (never mind Quanari) requires a considerable understanding of how people will treat you, how that race woudl react etc. in

I played as a Dwarf for the first time a couple of months ago, after many Elf and Human playthroughs, and I'd have to agree.

I never really had a desire to play as one, but I'm glad that I eventually did. They're like a hidden treasure, waiting to be discovered.

Well, I love humans because I'm human. So I always pick them first. But I might choose the Qunari first if they look good. ( more muscular and taller than humans is something that could attract me for example. )

Male Mage, elf in games that give a choice. My canon, flawed run through
Female human rogue. Slightly better results as its the second run.

After that, go through the options. Looking forward to seeing if warrior interests me enough to finish a playthough with one.

Plenty of people are still going to be playing the other races.

There's a thread proving that.

So nah. Regardless of what Bioware does, people will play all the races available. :)

Dwarf.
They seem really down to Earth.
...Wait that came out wrong!

Might try a Qun/Tal.

It would be a fun experiment if you ask me.If the larger percentage of people play as humans it would be great know if those numbers are skewed because new players always pick the default character or whether they just liked playing as humans.

Not at all, what I'm saying is a story does'nt always need humans to be the main characters.
