So I guess everyone'll just play as a Qunari as soon as the game's released...

Well, I love humans because I'm human. So I always pick them first. But I might choose the Qunari first if they look good. ( more muscular and taller than humans is something that could attract me for example. )

I'm human....therefore I'd rather play as something else....call it escapist fantasy if you will :)

That's the thing, why should the default always be human? Why can't they be elf, dwarf,or qunari? And most people who play as the default human do so because they expect it and it is considered to be the norm.

You seem to be saying that if we had a different default, these people would just change it back to human.

It would be a fun experiment if you ask me.If the larger percentage of people play as humans it would be great know if those numbers are skewed because new players always pick the default character or whether they just liked playing as humans.

I don't know.
I think you are underestimating human curiosity.  I plan on playin as a male human on my first play-through, but I sure as hell won't just be clicking on whatever the pale-skinned, narrow nosed, brown-haired, blue-eyed default may be.  And I'm certainly going to have a look at the other races just to see them.
Plenty of others will do the same I'm sure.

I just would find it interesting if the aforementioned pale, brown-haired, blue-eyed human male wasn't the first thing that cropped up, just for novelty's sake, even.

But since he showed up in the demo, it looks like business as usual.

Nope. Elven mage. Then a dwarf. THEN a qunari, if I don't play as an elf again.

I think a lot of people may still look at other race option as merely quaint flavour that don't matter and aren't really worth going out of their way for. So switching default to say, dwarf, would not affect those who just 'go with default' because they want to get started but make those people "oh races are just quaint" have to MANUALLY CHOSE human. And if they think there's no difference, why change?

Maybe make it randomised on start-up or something, hur hur

This. I'd love to see the results if they put the races and genders in alphabetical order, so the first option to pop up in the character creator would be a female dwarf. If people don't wanna be a female dwarf, male human is only two clicks away. My guess is that a majority would still play human because a lot of people like humans, but the exact percentages might change.

Anyway, I'll be playing dwarf first since the dwarf origins were my favourites and I'm SO HAPPY to have dwarves back as a playable race. I also suspect they'll be the least popular species again, so I'll do my tiny part to keep that 5% from going even lower.

After that, I do have my eye on a Qunari mage.

I understand. I still love playing other races as well. :)
It's just that humans are the race to which I most identify with. And I feel better involved into the story.

I'd actually bet that most people will never complete a playthrough as a Qunari, unless given a specific incentive to do so by the game, itself.

I think most people (about 55%) will likely play it once, as the default character (I'm guessing Human Male Noble.) Whenever I see statistics about people's race/class choices in these games, that seems to consistently be the case.

If, instead of measuring by total players, you measured by total playthroughs, I bet you'd see some different - and interesting - numbers.

Everyone? No. I have no interest in the Qunari or other races as PCs. While I'm happy for those players who desperately wanted the option of other races, I'm Human and, unlike other people, I don't hate myself to the point where I jump at the chance to play another species in Fantasy or Sci-Fi games. Human Mage all the way through the DA Saga, and Pround.

This is true, for me at least. Was going to play female elf rogue till they announced Qunari as a playable race. I have been kind of obsessed with horns since I saw Flemeth's design in DA 2 and ofc, the Arishok. They look toooooo awesome. Plus, I want people to **** their pants when they see my pissed off femquisitor :) (I can dream.).

I expect I'll play them all eventually, but the first time, I usually play a female human of the class they use in the demos (warrior for DAO, mage for DA2, and it will probably be rogue to start in DAI). That's my experimental playthrough where I discover all the ways it's possible to screw things up. Then I'll replay, trying different racial and class combinations. I've probably got 12 playthroughs completed from the Origin story to the end of DA2.

I will play as a qunari, male and female both, eventually, but my first playthrough is always a male elven rogue, if given the chance :)

I'll work my way through all of the races eventually but my first playthrough will always be a male human warrior cause that's just how I roll.

Probably wont play a dwarf, not a fan of them.

I see.

Everyone who plays something other than a human hates themselves?

I guess everyone who played Sonic the Hedgehog hated themselves? Pac-Man? Used someone other than Mario, Peach, or Luigi in MarioKart?

Does everyone who watches Wall-E want to be a robot? Does everyone who watches E.T. want to be an alien lost on another planet?

I'd just like to follow how far down the Rabbit Black Hole this logic path goes.

Boy did they ever miss out.

As for the Qunari, I hate to use the often misused term but 'fan service' comes to mind.  I hope the writers and designers have done a good enough job in justifying that race as an option.  I try and look at most DA issues as the common man of the world, not a templar or mage etc.  I'd have a very hard time trusting, believing or wanting to have anything to do with a Qunari.

Bioware should run an experiment.  Have half the people given Human Male as default, half assigned randomly to the others.  Then see how many more play something other than human male when the default is something else.  And whether this increases or decreases the chance that players complete the game.

I actually do want to be an alien when I watch E.T. I want to be a little one that looks just like him
