Your background is now tied to your race and class choice, it is no longer a separate options. From what I've heard anyway, I have no link/source available.

We aren't able to select the origins, from my understanding the race we are is already going to have a predetermined background story.

So its More Mass Effect in terms of Selection well better than nothing I guess.

As an example we already (sort of) have, we can play as a Dalish mage, but if we want to play as an elven mage, we will always be Dalish, not as a City Elf apostate.

Andraste's knickerweasels B/ I'll need to headcanon my elf rogue as Dalish if the elf rogue is now always City Elf. I love city elves but I did have the one Dalish rogue ginger....
