People do not play BioWare games for sex. That is just silly. They don't romance characters for sex.
What would be your reaction if Bioware announced that there wouldn't be any romances in DA:I

It always boggles me that the majority of anit-romancers on these forums never can find a solid argument against it and have to stoop to "It's not necessary" or try to make it into pornography.alliance commander wrote...

If romances where absent i would praise bioware for the rest of time. Romances are useless anyways, So Why do we need them?
If people enjoy a thing, that's more than adequate justification for continuing to make that thing.
All Dragons age romances where just disgraceful "adequate justice"? I understand the majority of bioware fans like them but i feel as the developers should focus on gameplay and rather than waste time and work on romances no one really needs. I guarantee all of bioware fans would riot because they couldn't ****** to their favorite "romance" I just think DA:I would be better off.
Seriously, does no one posess maturity?

Romance and love are key parts in motivating people to do some of the things they do. To use a weak example: You ask a single man why he works and he'll tell you it's so he can eat and eventually get that cool toy he wants. Ask a family man the same question and he'll tell you it's to provide for his family's needs and his kid's future. His needs are not the primary motivator. This carries into RPGs too: once the player becomes attached to certain characters they'll do whatever they need to to gain that character's approval. It's how RPG affection systems are so effective.
Beyond that, the PC and the companions work and basically live together for extended periods of time (DA:O is a year long in-universe). It's nearly impossible to live with someone for a year without developing some strong feelings for them - either hate, love, or intense comraderie. At the very least, flirting, physical attraction, and maybe small crushes would result.
Ultimately, I'd buy it, but I would feel that it had lost something vital.

I really fail to see how removing sex opens any doors to making relationships more mature. How about someone explain that to me. In detail.
Then we don't degrade into, well, you. We can appreciate characters and interactions with them in a more realistic manner. Does sexuality always equal maturity? I've been around the block enough times to know that's a hoot.
Or are you one of the people that's desperate for romance in games because it validates self-worth when you'd otherwise have no shot simply due to your incredible arrogance probably meaning that no girl (or man) would be able to tolerate you or take you seriously for more than 2 minutes?
Are you Ted Cruz?

Are there people on this thread that seriously think players romance characters for the purpose of sex? For the purpose of a 15 second scene or even a fade to black? People who seriously think that anyone would do that to get off instead of just watching regular porn?
Nobody romances characters for the sex scenes.

It makes sense to me as I am speaking soley in terms of the realm of games. While the characters are good, I think most of them could be further fleshed out if the side of them that exists just for the sake of sex and its lead up was spent forging a different, realistic (I don't quite mean this, but its the only word I can think of) relationship. Just my opinion though, feel free to disagree or not understand. Not trying to change anyone's mind.Plaintiff wrote...
That doesn't make even the slightest bit of sense. Most long-term married couples are in sexual relationships. Would those relationships become "deeper and more involved" if sex was taken out of the equation?TsaiMeLemoni wrote...

To me, my favourite aspect of Bioware games have always been their relationships, regardless of romance. To take it out completely, I wouldn't agree to it. Though, if the relationships are done well enough and more importantly, for what they're trying to achieve for that specific game, then it might work.
I think that a removal of romance could open the door to deeper and more involved friendship/relationship if the ultimate endgame of your interactions wasn't a sexual relationship.
Though honestly, some marriages might indeed become deeper and more profound if sex wss off the table, at least temporarily.
For example, finding out about someone's more deeper side without having to commit to a "relationship" per say. Jack could be used as an example, but I personally don't see her telling a "friend" or developing a relationship like the way she does with Shepard, without that "love" and mind you, a friendship can still consist of "love", but not that specific love, which I personally believe she only open up to a certain way.
Also, we have to think in terms of gaming limitations, I bet Bioware would love to spew out all these details about characters, but in mind, it's much easier to just leave out content for specific moments, like developing a relationship.
It can be a win/win if the quality is there mind you.

Also, I genuinely would like someone to explain to me why exactly the romance with Garrus is considered one of the most satisfying in Mass Effect. There's no sex scenes at all. Just fades to black. Why are players not furious and unsatisifed that they didn't get what they were supposedly looking for at all.
