I love Merril, but c'mon....
"I only betrayed you and tried to kill you once!" is not a good argument

Mages were portrayed like that because they had counteract how they were portrayed in DA:O, where frankly they did a ****** poor job of explaining the Templar/Chantry side of things and why the Circle system arose in the first place.

Having now had two games to figure out how to get this right, I would hope that DA:I will be more balanced than either of its predecessors.

Actually, I think DA:O did a better job than DA2.

Cases like Connor are why cirlces exist. Not the crazy, power-hungry mages. True, the templars and circles deal with them too, but the common, "normal" mages are why circles are necessary.

DA2 has a pretty good reason why mages in Kirkwall tend toward the insane, but Bioware just pulled a Bethesda and shoved an interesting plot point into codex entries. The Veil is torn to pieces thanks to all the suffering endured over the years, and several powerful demons are imprisoned under the city as well.

I think the problem with Connor is they undermined the fact that he just slaughtered an entire castle garrisoned with armed men, proceeded to raise them into undead slaves to his will and sent them out to kill more people in the city itself. Only to raise those deceased into undeath too.

All the while mind-controlling people into puppets and making them dance, too!

Andof course, the pro-mages will always find someoen else to blame. The culture. The laws. The Chantry. Everyone BUT the mage is the problem.

The whole DA universe needs more Connor-like mages and less Decimus-like mages.

With the rebellion and the war, I'd hope to see all types of people on both sides.
