So we've been hearing about this for a while now. In a recent interview (the Sci vs. Fi) we heard Priestly claim that if your guns are not upgraded on the Normandy there will be repercussions in the end (insinuating a space battle). There have also been several DEV posts stating there would be space battles and that the Normandy would do different things in cut scenes depending on what you have done to the ship.:) Does this not seem like a crucial part to a SciFi game? There have also been reports through magazines and other outlets that there are NO SPACE BATTLES.:( Which is it?

Do you want space battles and are there going to be any?

KEEP IT CLEAN!

There is no space battle gameplay.

Nope but they still are considering it. I wouldn't mind contextual battles though like press A for a rocket attack in a cutscene or B to attack the engines.  Similar to the interrupt system.

There will be space battles, but thankfully it will not be player controlled similar to the first game I'm assuming. I hope they do not implement player controlled space battles in ME3.

I'm hoping for at best cutscene space battles and at worst, quicktime space battles.

If there were space battles in gameplay, I'd want it to be a spin-off devoted to space combat. The Shepard trilogy is about infantry combat.

Only if there is no sound. To make it realistic.

There would also be no fiery explosions. However you would hear sound in the spaceship.

Wait, how would there not be fiery explosions? Mass Effect ships have fuel, if I recall.

Here is a good article on that.

Thank BSG for introducing me to real life physics in media.

Ok here's the issue I see.

Why would a magazine or a DEV state no space combat if they meant player controlled combat when there wasn't ne of that in the first game anyway? Sounds to me like they're talking about like what we had at the end of the first game(cutscenes essentially).

So in regard to that, do we have a cutscene space fights or no. I'm not worried about player controlled fights since that wasn't in the first game neway and really doesn't seem likely to be what the mags and DEVs are talking about.

oh come on people, common sense says you'll be up against collector ships at some point

considering how easily SR1 goes down in the first encounter, SR2 is gonna have to be waaay better in terms of anticruiser capability, just to stay alive

It would be possible only as the oxygen left the ship, but after all of the oxygen is dispersed there wouldn't be any fire. You need oxygen, fuel, and an ignition source to have a fire. Take away the oxygen in space an there is no more fire.

This. If there were to be a hypothetical ME space combat game, it would probably be an RTS, going by what I read in the ME1 codex.

i'm pretty sure there are space battles, but their outcome is based on your upgrades, not gameplay.

Actually the majority of space fuels contain their own oxidizer so there could be large fiery explosions in space the only difference is they won't keep burning.

There are space battles, we just don't control the directly. And thank God, we don't! :)

There would be an initial explosion as the oxidizing agent blew up, but it would be VERY quick.

Also with any sort of beam/plasma/heat weapons there would be a fire-like energy discharge on contact with a barrier that repelled or obstructed it.

I suppose after seeing the new launch trailer (WHICH IS AMAZING!) we can all rest easy knowing that THERE ARE space battles in ME2! after all you can see the SR2 launching missles/lasers/etc. in several parts!

I hope they do it in ME3 similar to the interrupt system as it can still play out the same way if you don't want to change the cinematics.
