Until someone forces their girlfriend or boyfriend to have plastic surgery to look like their virtual squeeze, no.

For the same reason there's music like this in video game. It add to the personality and storytelling of the game. For the same reason I installed Frostfall and get snowy. It's add to the immersion.

For the same reason your character get wet in assassin creed. They could just remove it and create another mission with robotic enemy that want to kill you. They do because it's make every other mission better and more immersive.

For the same reason they're adding living eco system in the Witcher 3. It's add to the immersion.

It's make the game feel more alive and more believable. I can't believe I wrote this.

What I mean is ... being able to shape your protagonist personality and what , who he like. Make the game more vibrant and alive.

Yep. I didn't used to think about it either way much, but I think all the qunari romance pleas slammed it home.

Edit: Though I tend to agree with the poster who said there was a bit too much caring going on either side of the fence.

Probably.

Or maybe they don't care enough about the romance, and care too much about the sex scenes? Eh?

I care about sex scenes, what are romances without some wild and unprotected sex?

Oh, yeah. I forgot the rule:

The love is all in the semen.

Wrong.

I would like to try to answer this.

The only reason I ever played a video game (since I was in my early 20's, I's now in my 40s) was because I was hurt in a car accident and had tons of down time. A few of my friends suggested I get DAO and DA2 because they thought not only would it help me deal with all the down time but also because of the actual romance part of the games.

Why? Well lets just say that I work in a profession where I spend a lot of time dealing with "romance" in a literary manner and I am also an active advocate for both women's and lesbian's rights. So they felt these games in particular had kind of a sideways way of hooking my interest.

So I am this odd demographic in that I am not a "gamer" but I am someone who likes to plays these particular games because of the romance or specifically because of the option to have a female/female relationship.

Don't get me wrong I am a closet "geek" so to speak. I have played and still do play table top and live action RPG games but for some reason I have never liked video games other than something like chess or those types of old fashioned games. Until Dragon Age that is.

Let me tell you I LOVE LOVE LOVE playing Dragon Age but almost only because of that I feel "included". In all other video games I have always felt "these aren't made for me". Dragon Age makes me feel like someone out there actually said, lets make a game and include these type of people, whoever "we" are.

I don't want to be over dramatic but in DAO the first time my Warden kissed Leliana I actually cried IRL. All I could think was "where has these games been my whole life?!?!?! Why can't they make a film like this?" You have no idea of how good it feels to see a form of popular entertainment that actually included "fantasy" as I dreamt about it. And unless you have been in this situation its hard to appreciate. It was amazing.

Now I will be honest the fight mechanics could have been 99% rubbish and it would not have changed my opinion about these games. I don't care. I just am so happy to see something female/lesbian positive in a real fantasy video game.

So yes I do care A LOT more about the romance options than ANYTHING else in the game. But I admit that I am a very, very tiny minority and not representative of most of DA players. I know I have probably angered a few people on this site in my staunch defence of the romance options but I think if you look at why I feel so strong about it you might understand how meaningful it really is to me and others.

Honestly I'm just here to bang qunari

But seriously, romances add a bit more to character interpretation and story and I care way more about story than gameplay.

Why do people care so much about why others play the games. We're all here to have fun - whether that's barking orders at our companions or breaking Alistair's heart into tiny, delicious pieces - so I say live and let live.

Nah, I'm not a girl. Therefore, the possiblitiy of me being a lesbian doesn't exist. However, I bursted into tears at the FemHawke/Merril romance. I've also cried at the Leliana/FemWarden romance. Bioware makes me cry. Not sure why, they just do.

I like romance in the games, but I want most of the game to be about plot, combat, aesthetics, etc.

I care about romances more so than gameplay. But I care more about the world and characters/storyline of DA more than romances. To me it's a big chunk of the role playing experience. I care about combat but it's not really main priority for me, as long as it isn't broken/weird.

Please don't think I am trying to flame you because I assure you it is from genuine curiosity that begs me to ask this: Why did it make you cry?

Too much, yes. To the point Bioware/EA's even been using their promoting of certain sexual viewpoints to deflect legitimate criticism of both writing problems and flaws in recent games.

Though I also think it's become far too easy to accomplish a romance, as well. At least DAO had you kind of work for something, in DA2 you just had everyone humping Hawke's leg from the get go to show off their new social viewpoint of the moment thing. I don't expect something on the levels of BG2's romance minefields back, but it was fun to gradually accomplish something that flowed naturally over the course of a game rather than something you could do in one camp visit (DAO) or lock into on the first player-induced conversation (DA2).

Indeed. Let people play for whatever reason they want.

Funny how the people who said people care too much about people caring too much about romances and who try to derail the thread, develope a “don't ask, don't tell" mentality.
