ye, but at what point does that kind of 'devotion' become disturbing? I mean, I enjoy the romances well enough, but just cant get my head around the attachment some here seem to have with these fictional videogame characters. Strange!

People will always find an attachment to fictional characters, no matter the medium. Yes, I agree, some of their practises can be disturbing, but for the most part, all I see is harmless fun amongst squeeing fans.

Of course, it's a very open, albeit, naive POV on my part because there are *some* who *are* disturbed individuals and take the escapism of fiction further than is healthy for the mind to accept.

However, I'm not going to go into some arm-chair psychiatrist mode and evaluate the reasoning behind their obsession, but I am going to say that as nerds, we're all under the 'obsessed' category.

We might not love fictional characters as much as they do, but we do love a number of other things to the same extent. Perhaps we're a less vocal or aggressive about said obsession, but all-in-all, 90% of us (even those that have hurled insults to mega-romancers) miss out on parties, concerts or big social events just so that we can stay home and play Mass Effect on release.

Escapism is our drug and romances are just a bloody side effect to the entire drama xD

I wouldn't attempt to characterise the Bioware game playing public as a bunch of 'shut ins' simfan, just like I wouldn't say that every Bioware fan is guilty of the kind of obsessiveness we see from a fair few here in those super-creepy character romance threads. My point is, in answer to the OP's question, that some people here almost certainly do care a little too much about romance in Biowares games. And I think you agree.

Perhaps the people that are obsessive about the romances are very lonely, or in bad relationships? Fiction is great for escapism.

(I'm sorry your friend had such a rough time though)

Why would you be sorry? Being seriously traumatized and unable to function as a human being for a week kicks ass.

I think there is just a masochistic tendency not to accept anything other than your soul being crushed as a valid emotional payoff.

Haha

Hurt me more, baby

Personally, I think those romance-heavy people should just go play Visual Novels. There are a gazillion of them out there, and they all cater to different preferences. You want to have sex with an octopus, it can be done.

Leave the games to gamers.

Saying that, I prefer good combat mechanics over romances, because gameplay is very important to me.

So do I. DA 2 had good characters and relationships, but the gameplay sucked. I haven't finished the game more than once.

So there is no point putting in 10 different romances, including every possible sexual preference, because if the game itself blows, nobody will see more than 1 or 2 of them.

The focus should always be on game mechanics first, and romances should be an afterthought.

Agree. I enjoy the romances, but they're just the brownies you eat after a full dinner.

I care about long walks in the moonlight... Oh you mean in the game, I want good game play but I also want good romance too what can I say, I'm a hopeful romantic that likes killing things and when covered in copious amounts of blood wants to be courted by an interesting  LI.:D

You're posting under the psuedonym Kaiser of Hearts with an old wizard as your avatar on a video game forum for an RPG that won't be out for another year. You're weird, too. Face it, you're on the same level of the nerd hierarchy as everyone else, I don't care how much football you play.

So people like the romances. I like them too, but that's because I enjoy having choices over the smallest details.

The reason I don't talk as much over the gameplay is because I haven't played the demo. I can commit on the animations, but that's about it.

because i've been reading here and there and it seems people give more importance to romances than gameplay mechanics such as battles, powers and other stuff.

Why?

btw, changing a little bit what do you prefer the most?, good romances or better combat mechanics?

Probably the good romances as to me the story & characters are key which the romances play into. Combat is secondary and while i want it to be enjoyable it isn't why i'm playing the game.

Combat mechanics are very important to me, but romances are even more important. They add another layer to the story and add much replayability.

I play Bioware RPG's because it is Biowares. I don't want a Bethesda or CD project Red clone from Bioware. So with all the flak they got over the past few years I hope they can hold on to enough identity where romances are a part of.

Yes I play RPG's to escape the real world and amuse myself.
I don't consider myself weird but I do think it is important to know why you escape the real world. (anonymous competition, being a hero/anti hero, persuing virtual relationship because of no fear of rejection ect...)

Personally game mechanics and romances are equally important to me, one thing in my eyes ME3 did very well.

I think other people also read way too much into romance posts.

For example if someone writes:

"OMG I LOVE CullenImage IPBImage IPBImage IPB"

Others immediately assume this is some crazy person living in a basement surrounded by Cullen voodoo dolls when in fact it's just a normal person with a regular job, spouse and children who is just killing 15 minutes by being a little crazy and over the top on the internet.

I think you're making a big assumption there - it's entirely possible to care about the romances and the rest of the gameplay. Visual novels don't cut it for me. I want to roleplay all kinds of interactions, not just how I relate to my love interest. I also want my character to get laid and slay dragons.

I care a lot about BioWare's romances, and I've also killed the Harvester on Nightmare several times. The two interests are hardly mutually exclusive.
