I just wanted to check about preordering Mass Effect 2 as digital version.
I'm from germany and don't want to wait ages to get an english copy.

So I checked two stores that sell Mass Effect 2 digitally.
Both say the game is 3500MB to download.

Wtf is going on ?
I'd have expected 15 gigabytes and not 3.5.

I think ME1 was 8 GB, so if ME2 is not considered an Addon why is it so tiny ?

Which sites were you checking? Steam is the best bet for this sort of thing.

Maybe it was 35 gigabytes and you read it wrong.

They've most likely got the compressed files, that makes it dramatically smaller.

ME1 was 8 gig compressed ;)

I'm unaware of any data compression that can stuff ~15GB into 3.5 GB

Those sites are way off-base

I was firing off a guess really, I have no real experience on that field.

So yes, most likely scenario is that information is wrong.

Yep I also saw on some sites that offer pre-order that game size is 3.5GB .

But I wouldn't worry much , you will have pleasure to download at least 15GB for DDE imo :)

In theory it could be possible they made the game smaller (only reduced texture resolution available) to make downloads cheaper. Of course that would be insane.

After all I think you can already download it (encrypted) and activate it when the release date is reached, so in that case why don't they know the correct size ?

I also just tried to pre-order it from Steam and guess what? They do not sell me a US version of Mass Effect 2 because I live in germany.

I'd have to get a german version, which I have no interest in.

Is the only way, once again, to get either a pirated copy or wait for weeks (for an import) while everyone else already has it ?

The software companies always complain about pirated software, I'd love to pay for the good games (like ME2) if I had a chance to do so.

I had similiar problem also . EA Store is no good for me , my country recently change name and they removed us from list and they are not interested in bringing us back , and all other sites for DDE preorder was only for North America and Canada , so I had to buy ME2 thru Steam , and pay 60 euros for DDE (60$=42euros) , I just hope there will be pre-load on Steam .

I think even if you buy German version you can switch to English with no problem .

I was poking these days to see if I can make Steam somehow to charge me in dollars , you could try to order ME2 DDE with this link to see if that helps :

http://store.steampo...p/901242/?cc=us

Load link from internet browser not steam browser .

Let me know if it works ;)

If you prefer a digital version I would recommend steam. But you can also try to check direct2drive or impulse. They are all about equal I'd say.

Your country changed name?

That cannot be right... what is it called now?

Completely offtopic I know, but you've kindled my interest.

Yugoslavia -> Serbia and Montenegro -> Serbia ( and yes we are in Europe , some people think we are in Siberia or Middle East  )

Until six months ago everything was ok , and we were able to buy from EA store as Serbia and Montengro ( althou that state was ended in 2006 or 2007 can't remember tbh ) , but from six months ago they just deleted us ( country doesn't exit )  and don't want to bother to add us again as Serbia ( maybe too much work for lazy ea store support stuff  )

To be honest I'd prefer a "normal" version downloadable via Internet but well as long as I can play for the start I'll be fine.
The digital games are usually not good modable as they contain special copy protection crap.
I don't know if there will be good mods for ME2, but IF there will be such mods and I own a digital copy I probably have to get a cracked release anyway.

A german release is not good for me.
O one hand it costs a lot more, about 75 $
On the other hand it's often without english language AND usually it is censored.
Even if the publisher states that the game is not censored, they often still make last-minute changes (like removing blood,"unmoral" missions, names, pictures or dismemberment features).

It looks like preload starts on 22., I'll wait for that date and see if something changed.

With digital content you are normally screwed in germany for reasons stated above - I feel the same pain. ME2 has a terrific (english) voice cast - the few german vids I saw make your ears bleed and your bain melt in comparison.

Lirezh, DA:O was the first game I bought via the EA store, and once downloaded, decrypted, activated and assorted other steps that might have been involved :) (can't remember), it actually launched a regular game installer and let me choose where to install the game.

Essentially the installation looks like what I would expect from a disc based version, unlike eg. Steam that uses its own installation system and folder structure (in my experience though, modable games are still that in the Steam version - although certain tools that might install mod packs or change game files etc., may not work).

I think I'll get the Digital Deluxe version of ME2 from the EA store. If for no other reason then because I hope it will unlock exactly at Midnight on release day as DA:O did. With Steam it could happen any time during the day - but in my experience often pretty late.

Actually even complex modding works with Steam games, as opposed to say D2D games (for example, OBSE for Oblivion)

They probably don't even know the size yet. I call placeholder.

Ordering from England could be a good idea. ;) Shipping should take 2-4 days at most.

You can either buy on amazon (standard version) or on Game (collector).
Of course, those are physical copies.

Of course they know the size, the games have already been/are being manufactured as we speak. Steam reports its size to be 15 gigs.

You could email the provider to see why they have a size difference, a dramatic size difference at that. It could be as simple as a typo, or epic game destruction.

Edit:

As to this, anything you can do with a retail game can be done to a game bought through steam. It has the exact same file name and folder layout as the retail game, it just starts at steam/user/common/ or something instead of at program files/developer/

And yes, I agree, DAO released late on steam store, as do all valve/steam releases. But this way, I can go to class happy and not think about missing ME2 time. My classes are important this semester, so nothing to tempt me is good. lol.

This is a silly question. Obviously the game is not 3500MBs. We know it comes on to discs at retail.

Why is this even being discussed?

You could try and buy from gamersgate.co.uk -they sell the digital version and you can pay in the cheap Pound, making it rather...well, cheap.

...of course the UK also gets the EU release date so you'd still have to wait ~3 more days compared to the US release. Sucks, but there really isn't any way to "import" a digital us version -I know. I tried to do that with DA -no dice. Those last 3 days really suck.
